Buttermere Light
On our first day around Cockermouth, after enjoying tasty coffee and delicious food, Lisabet and I wandered down the Vale of Lorton, thinking about sunset compositions. We stopped off at Buttermere village for a gentle stroll down to the foot of Buttermere itself, swatting away clouds of midges as we did. The sunset was beautiful, the lake was calm, and I took lots of exposures to ensure that I recorded the last of the sunlight caressing the peak of Fleetwith Pike.

ISO100, ƒ/13, 3.2secs at 14mm (21mm full-frame equiv.) using a slim circular polariser and a soft 3-stop ND grad filter stacked on my Sigma dp0 Quattro. This is a single exposure. Processed in Sigma Photo Pro, edited in Luminar and Photoshop.

Do you love Buttermere too?
"Fleetwith Pike Reflected in Buttermere in the Lake District, Cumbria" is based on a photo I took looking across the lake in early December 2021 during a lovely walk on a fine winter day - but I only painted this picture last month.
I created this image using Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils, which I think give a lovely soft feel to a painting without compromising on the vibrancy of colours.
We don't often go walking around Buttermere in the summer as it can get so crowded. But midweek, outside school holidays, in the winter, it can be a wonderfully peaceful place - and so beautiful!
The A4 unframed original watercolour is available for £75 including UK postage (or framed for £95 if you live close enough for me to deliver). Please just private message me to make your purchase.
I’m hoping it’ll be available soon as prints and printed on all sorts of lovely things at
https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/171678166
but at the moment (along with my painting of marbles in May and an elephant sketch completed this week) it’s languishing in a certain company’s review processes. 🙄
Thanks!
