Race report! Tough one today. No PR. 3:29:15. 1) I was late getting to the start because I misjudged shuttle time and how slow the porta john lines were. That meant I got caught up in a sea of much slower runners. The only way to find a place to get into my pace was to pass on the side of the road. Technically off course, but I was really stuck. It worked for a while, but mostly I would get caught in a pack and have to wait it out until I could find a gap to sprint ahead hoping to average out the pace. Horrible strategy, by the way, but if I didn't do it, I would have gone way over 3:30. Unacceptable. 2) Because I was on the grass so often, I flew by the first checkpoint so I had to sprint back to cross it. 3) I finally found a gap to get into my pace at about mile 10, but my legs felt heavy already from the terrible pacing early, and then it got hot. 70 degrees, not much shade, and I was as dehydrated as I've ever been despite grabbing at least two cups at every hydration station. So what did I learn? 1) Show up very early if I'm shooting for a PR on a new course. I thought I was early enough. Nope. That alone cost me about 8 minutes. 2) Manage expectations and accept a slower race when it gets over 65F. It's really not worth the anxiety I had when running got tough. With all that, it's pretty awesome that I was just a minute over my current PR. Pretty sure that if it's 20 degrees cooler, as it should be, and if I show up 45 minutes earlier, a BQ can happen here. Worth it to try again some day. Happy I got to share an awesome course and finish with my boys and family! . . . #runwiththemarines #polarm400 #polarusa #topoathletic #flilyte2 #marathon #runtheyear2017 #running (at Marine Corps War Memorial)
