Maria Ross is gay and Denny likes to tease her about her crush on Hawkeye; he’s a bit of a blabbermouth, too, and he’s done it in front of Ed and Al before, which made her want to kill him.
Mariza headcanons?
I’ve been thinking a ton about Mariza lately, so this is an especially nice ask.
Riza asks Maria out the first time. Riza, being both intimidating and less open about her sexuality, is too scary to ask out, despite how Maria’s crush furthers. Rebecca, picking up on both of her friends’ feelings, encouraged Riza to go for it.
They start dating some time after the Promised Day, when Rebecca moving to town throws them both in the same room outside of work a lot more often.
Riza pays for the first date, and cooks on the second; for the third date, Maria takes her to her favorite Xingese restaurant.
Maria, noticing Riza’s fixation with keeping her collar high in and out of work, misinterprets it as a gesture to hide the new scar on her neck. Some number of dates later, she tells Riza that it doesn’t look so bad, and presses a soft kiss there that makes a shudder run down Hawkeye’s back.
Riza remains as professional as ever with her at work, and Maria feels a little weird about it, until Rebecca assures her she’s just like that. If Maria really wants her to tell the rest of her friends they’re dating, she probably will. Maria feels better and lets Riza decide when that time is right.
One of Riza’s biggest hesitations to date is born of the large tattoo and heavy scarring on her back. Dating a soldier who may recognize the particular alchemic circle is especially frighting.
During one date at Maria’s, which led to a pleasant session of kissing that had Riza feeling quite relaxed, and more infatuated with Maria, Maria’s hand finds itself sliding up Riza’s shirt and onto her back. The date ends there, with Riza pulling suddenly away and uncomfortably trying to excuse herself, before leaving for home.
She grows more comfortable over time; Maria, being somewhat nosy, but wanting to respect her new girlfriend, refrains from asking what Riza is so worried about. She learns she has some scars first, and asks to see, which she is refused. Eventually, Hawkeye is comfortable enough that if Maria’s hand brushes over one, she won’t bolt. Next, she catches a flash of the tattoo, and feels exponentially more infuriated that she can’t see that, but attempts to accept it. Eventually she sees the whole thing and half the truth, and later, the entire truth.
Upon learning the entire truth, Maria knocks on Mustang’s door and punches him in the eye. Riza sits her down and rather exasperatingly repeats parts of the entire truth again, stressing that she asked for the tattoo to be unreadable.
Maria finds Riza to be a rather relaxing girlfriend. She’s not as argumentative as some of the other women she’s dated, and becomes quite a bit less stoic once she’s relaxed.
For Riza, Maria is calming. Showing her her back was extraordinarily stressful for Riza, but once she’s past that, all the other parts of the relationship are comforting. She sleeps better at night with someone there beside her, and really does enjoy the time they spend together. Maria is very cute; she’s happy a lot of the time, and more talkative than Riza is, but not in an annoying way, nor as pushy as Rebecca can be.
Ed finds out about them one day when arrives in Central late at night and pops by to say hello to Hawkeye. Maria is sitting at the small table in her kitchen. Riza allows Maria to say whatever she wants while she makes coffee, back turned to the conversation. Ed blushes, embarrassed talking about anyone dating, and blushes harder when he says that he and Winry have been going strong for a while. He likes both Hawkeye and Ross quite a bit, and approves.
Maria warns that they shouldn’t tell Denny until about the time she’s okay with everyone knowing.
