We make a video.
When the Friends of the Cal-Sag Trail posted the map of the Cal-Sag Trail we knew one thing: we had to ride it. More importantly, we had to be the FIRST to ride it!
So a little over a week later we were on the road to Lemont with Steve from Trails for Illinois to test this thing out. Verdict: this trail is AMAZING! Sure, it's a little rough around the edges right now - it isn't officially "built" yet (you can change that with a DONATION to the Cal-Sag Trail, ya know)... but the mix of experiences, from rural fire road, forgotten bridges, on-road daring, little seen views of the Cal-Sag Channel, urban exploration, historic architecture and roadside Americana is not to be beat. Heck, we don't know anything that can even rival this. Cal-Sag Trail, we love you!
So the next time someone asks you: "When will the Cal-Sag Trail be built?" Simply answer, "it's there for you to find."
Blue Island's very own (and very busy!) Jane Healy was on WGN last Saturday, Oct. 8, talking about Cal-Sag Cycles and the Calumet-Sag Trail. Take a listen!

The Blueprint Has Now Been Created
Rails to Trails Conservancy flew out to Blue Island on June 14 to visit Cal-Sag Cycles (wow!) and left with a blueprint for their Metropolitan Grants Program (double wow!!) - Read all about it here.
In three-weeks time, with no money for programming but a lot of generous folks and hard work, we created a national model. We didn't even know we were doing it! For us, it was all about bikes and bringing life back to Uptown.
This is what happens when you work creatively, think big, and never say no. Cal-Sag Cycles is a lot like the Cal-Sag Trail that way... blazing a path for others to follow.
Cal-Sag Cycles: Blue Island's Pop-Up Bike Shop
Cal-Sag Cycles started simply enough... Friends of the Calumet-Sag Trail gets a call from Rails to Trails... we'll let Steve tell the story:
Rails to Trails Conservancy asked me: if they gave me $12K, could I produce a 1-month Earn a Bike training program (kids get free Fuji bikes) somewhere in the Chicago area for 15 kids in three weeks time? So I and my friends did for Blue Island.
Yeah we did.
Cal-Sag Cycles asks: why wait for someone to come to town with a bike shop? If we earn bikes, isn't that a bike shop? It is, and we're doing it. For Blue Island.
