To my fellow aspiring novelists out there, let me tell you about two small miracles I have discovered lately.
There are lots of plans and structures for how to write a novel, but the Snowflake Method is honestly one of the most comprehensive and common sense ways to go about it that I have come across so far. It starts with the basic, concentrated idea that you have and builds logically from there, and by the time you're done you have pages and pages of prep work that make the writing the easy part. I've been stuck on the planning stage of my novel for almost a year now, and going through the first few steps I feel like I've made more progress in a week than in several months combined.
Secondly, Focus@Will is a website that combines music with neuroscience to help you concentrate like nobody's business. It sounds kind of shady at first (music and neuroscience, really?), but honestly every time I've used it I've been able to focus on my writing non stop for at least an hour at a time. There are a couple different genres of music to choose from, ranging from Classical to Ambient depending on what works best for you. It's some kind of witchcraft, I swear.
And now if you'll excuse me, I have more outlining to do.
