Wickham’s Fruit Farm- Donuts
Even though I have been going to different farms stands on the North Fork of Long Island for years, it literally pains me that I have only just recently discovered the melt-in-your-mouth donuts being made on-site at Wickham's. Now, it should be noted that Wickham's in and of itself is a great spot for fresh grown veggies, pumpkin picking and every other typical North Fork family farm activity. However, upon stopping to pick up some potatoes there last weekend, I was surprisingly and joyously overwhelmed by the smell of fresh donuts frying. This was not a typical Dunkin' Donuts or Krispy Kreme scent, but an unbelievably fresh, savory smell that I've only experienced in private homes or small town bakeries. My mother, who was shopping with me and noticed me taking deep breaths in of this heavenly scent, nonchalantly said they were the farm's homemade donuts. How could I have missed this so many times before?? I was stressed, excited, and suddenly starving.
Needless to say I could not help myself, and purchased a single fresh donut for $0.85 from the glass cake dish on a counter next to the register. It was perfectly warm, lightly coated in powdered sugar (though plain and cinnamon sugar were also options) and its' light texture made it taste more like a sugary, savory biscuit than a deep fried donut. I proceeded to eat half of my mother's donut as well; she's used to this kind of behavior from me by now and for some reason seriously unbeknownst to me didn't protest. Even that was not enough of a fix for me, so I purchased a bag the next day to share with some friends and was both delighted and shocked to discover that the donuts tasted just as fluffy and delicious leftover as they did fresh and piping hot at the farm.
Having already raved about this find to several people and purchased a bag or two of these donuts with friends, I was shockingly met with a few responses of 'I'm not a donut person'. Naturally, I didn't even know how to process that kind of comment but can only assume these people do not like the oily grease often associated with donuts. Thus, it pleases me to be able to say that despite the occasional grease stains seen on the Wickham's donut bags, the treats inside have no oily residue or greasy feel to speak of.
In what can only be described as a best case scenario, a routine grocery stop at a rustic farm stand turned into a delicious, and what will now be a frequently indulged in, snack. Still, these three paragraphs can hardly do these perfect little donuts justice, so should you ever find yourself even remotely near Cutchogue, NY, please go have some yourself.
