30 Days of Food Logging
by Betina Evancha
As a Product Manager at Noom, I spend a lot of time thinking about how to motivate people — starting with myself. The process goes something like this:
1. Convince myself that I should be doing something.
2. Do it once.
3. Make it a habit. This means that I do it automatically.
The first two pieces are pretty easy. I should exercise in the morning because it’s healthier for me in the long term -- and I feel more energized on the days I manage it. I certainly have the physical ability to exercise in the morning, and I’ve done it before. The step that causes trouble is the third one; despite knowing that I will be happier in a couple of hours (and decades from now!), my 7am sleepiness trounces my good intentions 9 times out of 10.
Enter Matt Cutts. He’s a Google engineer with a very cool idea: commit to try something for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, you’re either the proud owner of a brand new habit, or you’ve learned that it’s not something you really want to do in the long term.
I'm going to try this out by committing to log all of my meals for the next 30 days.
Why do a 30 day challenge?
It's a manageable amount of effort with a clear deadline. 30 days isn't such a long time!
It’s focused. It’s much easier to change one small thing about yourself than to try to wake up as a morning-exercising, sugar-avoiding, caffeine-free, perfectly-well-dressed version of yourself tomorrow.
It’s experimental. If you’ve always wondered how you'd feel if you biked into work every day, this is the chance to try it out with no strings attached.
Will a new habit stick after 30 days? Researchers actually disagree on this one. Although the popular estimate is 30 days, more scientific sources like the European Journal of Social Psychology suggest that it varies a lot by person and habit. It could take anywhere between 18 and 254 days for a habit to become truly automatic.
This could be intimidating, but you can't run a marathon unless you run a mile first, right? 30 days is a good bite-sized goal, and if I decide that I want to keep the habit, I can always commit another 30 days. I'm ready to go!
Why food logging?
At Noom, we talk a lot about how important logging your food is to losing weight. I'm not currently trying to lose weight, but I have noticed my food habits slipping over the past year or so. In particular, I snack almost constantly! It's time to get my eating in order.
I hope that logging everything I eat will help keep me accountable to the food choices I'm making as I make them. Then I can make the little adjustments that make up a healthy lifestyle.
I'm incredibly inspired by the Noomers I see who log their food every day. You're doing a great job, and I hope I can be as disciplined. I'll be posting about my experience every Thursday in August, so stay tuned to hear how it goes!

-Bikram (Hot) Yoga -944 calories. I felt like I sweat a lot more today... I realised half way through that i got there 15 mins early AND sat right next to main heater WOOH IT WAS SCORCHIN! Also a side note: bikram babes have the best bods :)

Best things about today:
-I felt focused and productive all day!
-I went to bikram (hot) yoga by myself for the first time (without friends). I really found myself trying harder and this instructor was a lot harsher which at the time you hated, but afterwards were very grateful for :)

Keep calm :)
