Julio N., McDonald’s Diabetes Laser Cut Food Printing Project, ATCM 4330 Culture Jamming. Fall 2017. JN writes, “I decided to use the laser cutter for this project for two reasons. First, it’s a process that mimics the production of fast food. The food is assembled in a mechanical meaner, and the workers are treated like machines, discouraged from deviating from the repetitive process. The second reason was to comment on the notion of branding. The laser cutter gives the text a wood burn or cattle rating aesthetic. McDonald’s brands itself as something good that brings happiness. The outside of the packaging is bright and happy, closed with a sticker that reads “I’m loving it.” When the packaging is opened, MC Donald’s actual product and brand is revealed for its unhealthy reality. I used the words “Diabetes” and “Heart Disease” in my project, but other words such as high blood pressure and obesity could stand in their place.”
