Newcastle began the season in chaos. Ruud Gullit dropped Alan Shearer for the Tyne-Wear derby, Sunderland won 2-1 at St James’ Park in the rain, and Gullit was gone within days. Then Sir Bobby Robson arrived, and his first home game produced an 8-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday with Shearer scoring five. Elsewhere, Sunderland became one of the stories of the season through Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn. Leeds United went top with Michael Bridges and Harry Kewell flying. Roy Keane dragged Manchester United through a noisy early season with a huge captain’s performance at Highbury. United’s goalkeeper problems after Peter Schmeichel became impossible to ignore.
