i get it now (about peter). honestly the first time i watched the movie i remember liking peter but now rewatching knowing what he’ll do just messed that up for me. i think colin absolutely was phenomenal as peter !! it made me laugh how he was so glad to be with anna even though she was so visibly uncomfortable with the entire situation but he was like “oh yeah this is awesome!!”
i also remember from my first watch not completely hating peter when the movie ended just feeling like, woah.. idk how to explain but i was hesitant to hate him completely even though he was bat shit crazy
Haha, yeah, it's actually kinda cute how genuinely oblivious he is to Anna's discomfort. He just simply doesn't understand that she (a) might not want to be with him and (b) has the right to make that choice for herself in the first place. I say this as respectfully as possible, but the guy's a fucking idiot 😂 He just has no clue what he's doing wrong or that it's not totally awesome (!!).
Mind you, it doesn't make his actions any less reprehensible. They're still terrible, terrible actions - and damaging, traumatic ones for Anna to have to endure. You can hate someone's actions and be completely against them while still understanding why they acted the way they did and having some sympathy for them.
It's that kind of complex emotion that Peter causes in the viewer that makes me love him as a character. Of course, some people choose not to (or can't) see the more complex aspects of his character and are just gonna hate the guy entirely - and that's perfectly fine! But by doing so, they're not getting the full impact of the character and the movie itself. It's not a film about one asshole with no concept of interpersonal decorum or boundaries. It's a film about how humanity can become a monstrous caricature of itself when left entirely to its own devices. It's about how people are shaped to fit into their environment and in an unhealthy environment, they will become unhealthy people and perpetuate that cycle. You just don't get that from the film if you focus merely on "he's a bad guy."
I feel like that's a key aspect to a lot of the roles Colin takes. He gravitates towards villains, yes - but complex villains that have more depth to their characters and their storylines than just, "He's a bad guy and he does bad things."
Well, except for maybe JJ Sneed. He's a bad guy and he does bad things. There's not really much more nuance to him than that. But he's a bit of an anti-hero. He's charismatic and charming, like Hook, and you want to like him... until you realize he actually IS completely bankrupt of any good qualities. And by then it's too late. You've been had right along with Maddie, and it makes the flick all the more fun.
Oh, and Professor Harrison. That guy's a dick.
