Even though I can’t enter the force for change competition as it’s not open to Australia, I still thought I’d give it a try. So this is TR-48. He is a small resistance astromech droid that uses the latest hover technology to move around rather than on wheels, this allows him to have a more free range of movement. His head can also detach from his body to allow him to go in smaller areas or just fly around certain areas to give a live video feed back to the owner, and other various things.
This is my entree to Force For Change’s design a droid contest. It a disability assistance droid, inspired by the Seventh Sister’s ID9 Seeker Droids and the time in the Inferno Squad book where Seyn disguised Dio as a droid she needed for a medical condition. I’ve had a lot of fun thinking about what kind of things a DS droid could do, not just for the DS-75 model I depicted, but all the different variants for people with different disabilities.
It also reflects the kind of stuff I want to see in Star Wars. Outside of cyborgs, blind Force users, and amputees, there aren’t really any other disabled characters in Star Wars. All kind of SciFi stories often don’t world build how their advanced technology helps people with disabilities. There’s hoverchairs and the near perfect prosthesis, but that’s about it. What about droids? How could they help people who, this being star wars, had the money to afford one.
