" Болиголовы были не единственными волшебными растениями в Еловом Облаке. Например, куст сирени за колодцем. Иногда он был просто кустом сирени. А иногда, особенно в сумерках – склонившейся над вязанием старушкой. Таким он был. И ель на берегу, которая в сумерках или в штормовые зимние дни казалась ведьмой, наклонившейся над берегом, её волосы развевались за спиной. А некоторые деревья разговаривали, Мэриголд слышала их. «Идём, идём», – всегда звали сосны, растущие справа от сада. «Мы что-то расскажем тебе», – шептали клёны у ворот. «Разве есть что-то лучше, чем любоваться нами?» – напевали белые берёзы вдоль дороги – их посадила Младшая бабушка, когда приехала в Еловое Облако невестой. А тополя, что стояли на страже у старого дома. Ночью ветер шумел меж ними, словно скорбящий дух. Смех эльфов и прерывистые стоны звучали в их ветвях. Можете говорить, что угодно, но Мэриголд ни за что бы не поверила, что эти тополя были просто деревьями."
