By the time everyone gathered around the outdoor kitchen, dinner was already beginning to take shape.

The initial awkwardness from arrival had started to wear off, replaced by the shared understanding that if anyone wanted to eat tonight, they would actually have to work together. Groups naturally formed around different stations while ingredients and supplies were spread across the wooden counters.

You found yourself at one of the prep tables with Chan.

A large bowl of vegetables sat between you alongside a cutting board and a basin of water. Nothing particularly exciting, but it was enough to keep your hands busy. 

For a while, the two of you worked comfortably in silence. It was the kind of silence that came when neither person felt pressured to fill every second with conversation.

You rinsed vegetables while Chan peeled and chopped, occasionally passing things back and forth as needed. Around you, voices carried across camp. Someone laughed near the firepit. A group at another station was debating how much seasoning was too much seasoning.

A few hours ago, everyone here had been strangers. Now you were preparing dinner together like you'd been doing it for days.

As you passed another vegetable across the table, Chan glanced over. "How are you holding up?"

You looked at him suspiciously. "That's a surprisingly serious question."

A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "I only asked how you're holding up. Not about your life goals.”

You laughed. "Then I'm doing okay."

"Okay?"

"Why are you repeating it like that?"

"Because 'okay' can mean about ten different things."

"And you know which one I meant?"

"No." His answer came easily. "I was hoping you'd tell me."

You looked at him for a moment before shaking your head. "Are you always this persistent?"

"Only when I'm curious."

A laugh escaped you despite yourself. Chan smiled and returned his attention to the vegetables, giving you an easy out if you wanted to take it.

Instead, you found yourself answering. "I think I'm still adjusting."

"To the island?"

"The island. The cameras. The fact that we're all living with strangers now."

"That's fair."

You glanced over at him. "You're adjusting pretty well."

"That's because I haven't had enough time to embarrass myself yet."

The answer came so quickly that you laughed. "Yet?"

"Give it a day."

"A day?"

"You have a lot of confidence in me." His grin widened.

"I like to set realistic goals."

The conversation drifted naturally after that, moving from one topic to the next as vegetables were washed, peeled, and cut. At some point, without really noticing when it happened, talking stopped feeling like effort.

Together, the two of you started toward the rest of the group. The kitchen was louder now, filled with conversation and laughter as everyone settled in for dinner.

You should've been paying attention to that. Instead, you found yourself wondering how Chan had managed to make a few hours feel like a lot longer.

Which felt like a dangerous thing to be thinking on day one.
