you’re never told

the world is yours

because you can’t handle the truth.

you put forth your best foot each time,

and each time you taste the

bitterness of sweet fruits

hoping that next time will be different.

the world will do more than roll you up

and spit you out.

this world will take you

for all that you’re worth,

all that you got

and make you feel like

you’ve been scooped from yourself,

no corners left undivided, unsheltered, unnerved.

but you know the best part?

you still have the courage to

think the best of your worst thoughts,

smell the rain in the midst of a thunderstorm,

grow sunflowers through concrete,

and outrun a tornado because you think you can,

never quite satisfied, you never fail to open your mind

you pick yourself up off of the ground because you know you have to

and you encourage others along the way.

may your greatest pride be in the way you care for the world even when the world cared little for you.
