Forever stamp. Kam Mak. 2019.
This stamp design was issued on January 17, 2019 by the U.S. Postal Service as the last in its second series of Celebrating Lunar New Year stamps. By featuring peach blossoms, artist Kam Mak incorporated Chinese culture in his design. He states, “The peach is very auspicious and represents long life,” and “[marks] the beginning of spring.” The golden boar and Chinese character 猪 in the left hand corner of the stamp were kept from the previous stamp series, and indicate that the new year, celebrated on February 5, 2019, will be the Year of the Boar.
Mak was born in Hong Kong and moved to the United States in 1971 with his family. He resided in New York City and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts. He has illustrated for many clients including Random House, National Geographic, and Time Magazine and is currently a professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Mak cites designing the second Lunar New Year stamp series as the highlight of his career, appreciative of the opportunity to share the celebration of the Lunar New Year through his work.

💫#ArtIsAWeapon @op #WomensHistoryMonth The United States Postal Service @uspostalservice honored #ToniMorrison, the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature @nobelprize_org, with a #Foreverstamp. The brilliant writer, editor and scholar - who transitioned in 2019 - is revered for her ability to examine #BlackAmerican identity through sharp, spellbinding prose—often focusing on the experiences of #Blackwomen. “One of the goals of our stamp program is to raise awareness and celebrate the people who represent the very best of our nation,” says Pritha Mehra, chief information officer and executive vice president of the Postal Service, in a statement. “... We honor Toni Morrison with one more tribute—our new stamp that will be seen by millions and forever remind us of the power of her words and the ideas she brought to the world.” The new stamp features a portrait of Morrison that photographer Deborah Feingold took during a 1997 cover shoot for Time magazine @time. The design was unveiled March 7 at a ceremony at Princeton University, where Morrison taught for more than 15 years, and which is currently staging a months-long series of exhibitions and programs dedicated to the author’s life and literary achievements. The ceremony featured a letter from former President Barack Obama @barackobama and former first lady Michelle Obama @michelleobama, which was read aloud, as well as a video tribute from Oprah Winfrey @oprah. “Toni told fundamental truths about our country and the human condition,” the Obamas wrote, “but she didn’t just reflect what was true. She helped generations of Black Americans reimagine what was possible.” In 2012, Obama presented Morrison with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “Toni Morrison’s books are in so many of our homes and abide in our hearts because she served as a catalyst for generations of readers over the years to understand the power of reading and words,” said Winfrey in her video. The media mogul’s book club has highlighted four of Morrison’s books—more than any other author. Winfrey also starred in and helped create the 1998 film adaptation of Beloved. • Source: www.smithsonianmag.com https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp0GJwtOe8h/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
