Hey, I’ve got a Theory. I’m new here, but I really wanna share this. I hope … people enjoy?
Note: This is going to include information regarding what Monika’s .chr file decodes into.
DDLC is over now (well, not everyone’s seen the other endings yet, but this doesn’t involve the other endings), so I’m going to say some stuff. I waited, because I’ve already played the game, decoded all the .chr files, and gotten all the endings, and I didn’t wanna accidentally mention something from later in the game? And this doesn’t have anything to do with the stuff that the other endings add, so yeah. When I played through DDLC I managed to go in (mostly) unspoiled - I knew the game had gorey stuff but that was about it. After playing the game once blind, I wanted to learn more, since I loved the game. I quickly realized everyone hates Monika. And I…while I felt that way at first, realizing before Sayori killed herself that Monika was goading her into it…. I don’t think Monika is meant to be the ‘villain’ here. After all, once even cute innocent Sayori becomes president of the Literature Club, she goes the same path even quicker.
Monika doesn’t for realsies delete the other characters, and in fact, she contemplates deleting her own file to kill herself before even thinking about them. I went on about how I feel about Monika in my liveblog of the game, suffice to say I think she’s a victim.
I’m rambling, so now onto my theory. Everyone is talking about how Anti is like Monika, and his voice comes up when she talks pretty often. But…just like how the game makes Monika out to be the villian right until the end…what if Anti’s playing everyone for fools? There’s already theories all over about how he might already be completely in control and “pretending” to be Jack and all that.
What if Anti’s playing up his association with Monika…to make us ignore the “can you hear me?”s? In the game, Monika tries to reach out a few times to the player to be saved, because she is trapped…and everyone’s saying the “can you hear me”s are Anti, but what if Jack is trapped and Anti is trying to get us to ignore him? If we can so easily mistake Anti for Jack, why not the other way around? And again, Monika refers to herself as a real person trapped inside the game. Jack mentioned she “is” the game, and from a coding perspective, sure, but she herself says she feels like you and her are the only “real people” in the game, and she does separate herself from the game. That could be another layer onto trying to get us to think Jack’s cries for help are Anti being cryptic?
There’s more. When Monika’s .chr file is decoded it turns into this. A message seemingly directly from Monika. A message straight for the player. The message is her saying everyone is dead, and that she believes that if you could do anything to stop this, you would by now. She goes onto say, maybe you can go back to THE BEGINNING of the game, and warn the characters to prevent the inevitable bad ending, which really goes in hand with the “broken time” stuff….
But what really gets me is the end of the message, where she says, “Never mind. I know that’s wrong. This is my story. It’s time to be a fucking hero. Both of us.”
“Both of us.” It’ll take both Jack and the viewers to “be a fucking hero.”
I don’t think Jack has actually seen the decoded file yet but…it fits a little too well, and if he knows there’s something there…well. I’m sure he’ll figure it out.
@fear-is-nameless @no-strings-puppet, ya’ll are the only theory blogs i know of right now? I hope you don’t mind me tagging you? (also, puppet, while i was tagging you i noticed you recently made a post with a similar thing, so here’s more fire for ya, i guess?)
