The director is ethnically (not religiously, I don't think) Jewish, and based his interpretation of the story on ancient Hebrew Midrash. So it does involve complex exegesis, just not a Christian one.

real question is did your buddy give you a copy with the good cover art or the shameful cover art

lol jk tbh I don't have time to read it but a) it's ~actual fantasy~ written by a ~real life woman lady~ and that's rather rare and b) it was highly recommended to me by someone I respect and they essentially told me I couldn't sleep until I read it so there's that
