Around Atlanta, many people who’ve gone through Downtown, even if they  haven’t noticed the Forsyth-Walton Building (currently threatened by demolition) will recognize this fabulous old sign, which hangs off the corner: “The Pipe Corner of the South.” It’s been photographed many a time, so I searched Flickr and found many an example. I’ll look on Instagram too and hopefully will also find pictures of the building that way.

Here’s the caption from this shot, from back in 2012:

One of my favorite vintage neon signs I've ever seen was placed by the Royal Cigar Company in downtown Atlanta. It's located at the corner of Forsyth St. and Walton St. at a place now called the Forsyth-Walton Building. Apparently, the Pipe store closed in the early 1990s. When it was working, the neon tubes represented smoke rings rising from the end of the pipe.

The day I took this photo, I saw the same sign on TV! It was the day after Thanksgiving and I was visiting my brother's family in GA. We started a family tradition by watching a Walking Dead marathon. In the very first episode when Rick goes into downtown Atlanta, he goes through this intersection while chased by zombies.

Yes, the building IS in the Walking Dead, Season 1 at least. I know because that show was shot right outside my building and one day I came home and there was a tank right in front of it. I still haven’t seen the series, despite the number of times I ran into zombies during filming. -Wendy

Forsyth-Walton Building, Atlanta, Georgia by Wendy Darling

Located right out my window, kitty corner from my apartment, the Forsyth-Walton Building is an overlooked 2-story Art Deco commercial building in Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. In March 2010 it got a new paint job! It used to be pink on the bottom, not green. Anyway, they did not a bad job painting it actually, so when I went out on a photo walk shortly afternoon, I decided to capture it.

Historic Preservation

This building was endangered a few years back when the Federal Court of Appeals across the street (itself a historic Beaux Arts building) wanted to tear it and its neighbors down so it could build expanded offices. The city's historic commission convinced the federal government to leave the block alone and rather than tear down, to buy and rehab the block of 10-story, less architecturally unique brick office buildings behind the courthouse.

P.S. I posted this same image very early in the life of this blog. I'm reposting a whole bunch of my own images so if you're a long-time follower, no, you're not going crazy.
