'Getting Back' 🐚 What or where do you want to get back to? Here is my self-portrait reference photo and final painting about getting back to the Isle of Man - celebrating home & belonging. ❤🇮🇲 The story behind the painting? I painted it years ago whilst I lived near London and was planning to move to the Isle of Man, a place where I had spent a lot of time as a child. It's hard to describe in words (which is partly why I painted it), but I was exploring the pull we feel to places and how some places feel like home and other don't. How we can feel we 'belong' to geographical locations and in or out of nature. I'm aware many people have moved recently or are planning to, if that applies to you I hope you feel settled in your new place & it feels like home. So self portraits... here is 'Getting Back' 🐚 - reference photo & final painting celebrating home & belonging. ❤ The story behind the painting? It is a self portrait painted whilst I lived near London and was planning to move to the Isle of Man where I had spent a lot of time as a child. It's hard to describe in words (which is partly why I painted it), but I was exploring the pull we feel to places and how some places feel like home and other don't, how we can feel we 'belong' to geographical locations and in or out of nature. The shells in the hair and turquoise paint represents the island with its many beaches and turquoise seas. The shells also link to baptism. I created the large, interesting hairstyle to engage viewers more and to emphasise the root like quality of my dreads (rooted in a place, family tree). It's not so well known dreadlocks are also associated with Native Americans. I have Native American heritage, I was exploring this too as I realised I have a strong pull towards nature and the natural, which is a strong theme in Native American culture. I love self portraiture & I'm especially inspired by Frida Kahlo's self portraits. Painting yourself is easier as you know your face, you always have a model, you don't have to worry about offending yourself and you can express your internal world / thoughts / feelings easily. Self portraiture is rather vulnerable though and can come across as narcissistic, which the majority of the time it's not (certainly not for me). ❤ 61cm (w) x 91cm (h) x 2cm (d) paint on stretched canvas.
