GALTx eNew: Become A Hero, Save A Life!

Sure, it's hard to say goodbye (most of the time). Just knowing this might be the first time a foster dog has been in a home is fun. Watching them learn the ropes and blossom is exciting. You teach them about stairs, sliding glass doors, vacuum cleaners, you name it. Occasionally you may get a last minute call asking to foster a greyhound whose owner is no longer able to care for them. This greyhound may be fearful and unsure about their own significant life change. Being their soft place to land is so rewarding. 

Yes, the house is quiet after they leave, sometimes lonely without being followed everywhere, leaned against, and looked at with loving eyes. Oftentimes it's just easier to foster, and not adopt. All the foster's medical expenses are paid for by GALT, an entire community is available for support and you're providing a "greyt" service to the foster in your care. 

Why foster, people ask? Because we can, we love it, we love to meet the people who adopt the greyhound we cared for and loved.

GALTx eNews: Why Is GALT Going Green For The Irish?

Most of you are probably already aware that Greyhound racing has declined dramatically in the United States in recent years. Only two tracks remain operational and they are both in West Virginia. With the decline of racing, fewer American Greyhounds are now available for adoption and the available retirees are finding homes on the East Coast. We simply do not have enough American Greyhounds available now to meet the adoption demand.

Meanwhile, Greyhound racing remains popular in Ireland with 17 stadiums still holding races. In the neighboring United Kingdom, more than 20 tracks still hold races. While some of the Irish and UK retirees find homes in Europe, they have to compete with the Spanish Galgos also seeking adoptive homes in the region. The Irish Greyhounds need access to more potential adoptive homes than are available to them regionally. 

We saw both an opportunity and a solution in these circumstances. GALT has long had the infrastructure needed to help find homes for retired racers and Ireland has the retired racers needing to find adoptive homes. We hope our ongoing deliveries of hounds from Ireland will prove to be a perfect match leading to many happy hounds and families!

GALTx eNews: Room For One More?

Foster homes are always our tightest resource. We usually have over 20 hounds in our kennel patiently awaiting their turn for a foster home. Some of them have waited for months. Currently, all of our existing foster homes remain full. So, if you live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Oklahoma City, or Albuquerque areas, we need your help!

We have a wide variety of hounds needing foster homes and different foster experiences to offer. We need foster homes who can take in a vacation foster for a short time while the hound's regular foster family is away as well as long term foster homes for hounds with health issues. We need foster homes for bonded pairs like Thor and Loki, hounds that need a home with no other pets, senior hounds, puppies, and honorary Greyhounds like Shyanne. We need foster homes for American retired racers, Irish retired racers, former strays, and seasoned hounds whose owners could no longer care for them. We will work with you to identify a good match.

While we always need more foster homes, this isn't our regular request. You see, we have big plans for any space we can free up in our kennel: We are planning to welcome retired racing Greyhounds from Australia next week and hope to welcome many more in the upcoming months. The Aussie hounds will come to us with at least a couple of weeks experience in a foster home and all of their medical needs addressed. They will be ready for adoption with just a little time in a foster home. We just need space for them.

Fostering is a key step on our hounds' journeys home forever. Our foster parents provide key input on their foster hounds' personalities and help them find the right forever home. And if you're thinking you could never give your foster up, sometimes that happens. Foster parents are permitted to adopt their foster hounds if they cannot say goodbye. All the medical expenses for the foster hounds are covered by GALT until adoption so you have the fun of an extra without the expense. Please take a moment to consider opening your home to a foster. GALTx eNews: A Shortage Of Greys? No Way!

We hear talk that people perceive a shortage of adoptable retired racing greyhounds. We have a hard time seeing it that way. In addition to all of our available hounds, more than twenty hounds are currently calling GALT's leased kennel a temporary home, and the majority of them are retired racers. 

For example, Dobbler is a young boy who ran about 31 races at Mardi Gras, Gulf and Dubuque before retiring in December 2018 and joining the GALT family. Woodrow (brother to GALT's Giovanna) is a 1.5 year old boy who raced just nine races early this year at Sanford-Orlando. Thriller is a bit more mature at six years old. He has over 100 races under his paws, all at Derby Lane, and he also sired 10 offspring. He definitely earned his happy retirement! These gentleman retired racers and all the other hounds in our kennel share one thing - they need to spend a little time in a foster home to prepare themselves for adoption. 

And that's where we see a real shortage! All of our foster homes are full right now and have been operating at capacity for some time.
