Update on "Foundation" from AppleTV, with characters and situations created by Isaac Asimov. Look, I know the original was dialog heavy and somewhat cerebral, but I'd assumed the producers and writers knew that going in. Well, maybe they did, but that didn't matter, because they knew just what to do to tighten that baby up. Things like: ☑️ Guns guns guns! ☑️ Underground resistance movements ☑️ Huge ginormous explosions! ☑️ Gritty brow-furrowed lone-wolf outliers ☑️ Guns guns guns! ☑️ Unnecessary religious woo-woo ☑️ Mysterious monoliths ☑️ Unnecessary psionic woo-woo ☑️ Vaguely Middle Eastern terrorists ☑️ Guns guns guns! ☑️ Unnecessary time-travel woo-woo ☑️ Lots of running and screaming ☑️ Inexplicable character interactions ☑️ Token wokeness ☑️ Guns guns guns! ☑️ Everything's a whited sepulcher ☑️ Gotcha! character arcs that no one saw coming a mile away ☑️ Ordinary people don't make history, only messiahs ☑️ If you throw enough moons in the sky, it'll look awesome ☑️ Guns guns guns! There's more, much more, but Instagram actually does have a character limit. I will say, the cast is working hammer and tongs to make sense of this mess, but there's only so much they can do. So, we basically have a latter-day off-the-shelf paint-by-numbers "SCI FI EXTRAVAGANZA" with names and places lifted wholesale from a legacy property with limited mass appeal. This expression on Leah Harvey's face kinda sums up my reaction to her Salvor Hardin facing a scene and situation that's about as far from the original characterization and intent as it's possible to get: what the actual fuck? I know, Salvor. I know. #foundation #asimovfoundation #foundationseries #isaacasimov https://www.instagram.com/p/CXqjyNUrU4_/?utm_medium=tumblr
