Pitufa, the adorable firedog of the Antigua Volunteer Fire Department.
Filmed and photographed in Antigua, Guatemala. I chose to document the Bomberos Voluntarios of Antigua, Guatemala while at the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop this year, studying under VII's Ron Haviv. Gaining access was fairly easy despite my very poor Spanish. Captain Edwin de Leon was very quick to invite me into his Fire Department, and even my home.
This piece serves as a brief trailer for a project that I wish to continue and expand upon later. I truly felt welcome in Guatemala, and found the people to all be very kind and accommodating. These Firefighters are unpaid and simply care enormously about taking care of other people. They are giving in spirit, despite having enough or even fully functional equipment.
The Antigua Volunteer Fire Department was inspiring to me, as they have an enormous amount of responsibility, with such little equipment and little or no pay. They serve the people of Antigua. They are an extraordinary group of people, who have a tremendous sense of commitment to one another, their community, and to their duty.
Many thanks to Foundry Photojournalism Workshop and Ron Haviv for this opportunity.
