This is clearly a bop, but does it slap, or does it fuck?
Four on Six
I was asked during the week whether I could recommend any “old” jazz guitar albums. To be honest, I’m not much of a jazz guitar fan, but one of the benefits of taking on this project is that I get to learn things too. So let’s start with Wes Montgomery, probably one of the most well known and talented jazz guitarists. Wes usually (I know ‘cause I’ve just been searching) comes in at position number 1 in any list of best jazz guitarists, albums or songs. Even though Montgomery died in his hometown in 1968 at just 45 years old, he influenced just about every jazz guitarist who followed. This version of Four on Six, from his 1965 album Smokin’ at the Half Note with the Wynton Kelly Trio, has a steamrolling hard-bop groove, and plenty of guitar acrobatics. Interesting in this recording too is Paul Chambers double bass solo, which he bows rather than plucks. The title Four on Six refers to a 4/4 rhythm superimposed over a rhythm of 6/8.
