We were supposed to go to the BNP Paribas Open Tennis Open last week after coming back home from the #FSmauiClassic, but my body let me know I needed to take a rest by giving me a cold instead. I guess that’s what comes with being 41, you learn to listen to your body when it sends you physical messages and heed its warning.
Katherine Forrester Westerman captured this on-the-court pictorial series of me on the Zerbe Tennis courts at Four Seasons Maui on the day before we left - the day after a private lesson changed my tennis game for life.
They make me feel like a 1970s screen queen on the courts...and, I’m not even just the teensiest bit sad that I missed the Eisenhower Cup for the sake of my health.
So, this is for all the girls like me who were told they weren’t the “athletic type” when they were growing up, and yet found out as women that their bodies are AMAZING WONDERS, and grow into their respective athleticism, learning to not only love a sport or a workout or a Pilates practice or a yoga routine, but also to trust their bodies and their instincts, thus quieting all of those voices who told them they were less when they didn’t make the team, didn’t win the game, couldn’t even hit the ball - or, perhaps like me, hit the ball so passionately and with so much gusto that it always went out of bounds.
Here’s to a life filled with foul balls, hitting out of bounds, falling on our faces and approaching life with so much gusto that you might just hit a homerun every now and then.
