Conversations and laughter filled the space. The jukebox melodies enriched the atmosphere beginning the battle of who can be louder - man or machine. Your favourite song was playing and you tapped your foot against the dusty floor while polishing dirty fingerprints of the pint glasses.
The room carried a stench of cigarettes and drink. A hint of sick traveled briefly as the bathroom door opened and closed. You took a mental note of needing to wash your clothes tonight.
“You okay to close up? I gotta go.” Without being given a chance to answer your colleague was out of sight. Sighing, you placed the glass you were polishing into the cupboard and walked over to stand right behind the bar.
Being it only a half hour from closing time the room began to clear out. Only the usual Serpent crowed lingered, clearly intoxicated. Amongst them was the king himself, FP Jones. He had the kind of physique that stopped anyone in their tracks and you couldn't help but stare.
The older serpent caught your eye. You could feel your cheeks turn flush as he sent a brooding smile your way. Changing positions quickly you tried to pretend as if suddenly you were busy doing something, anything at all.
“Excuse me.” The chilling voice came up behind you sending a shiver of excitement down your spine. You shifted your body to meet FP’s gaze. “What can I get you?” “Just water sweetheart, need to sober up a little.” You smiled at him, he called you sweetheart.
“One glass of water coming right up.”
FP sat down on one of the barstools and began a conversation. One thing was for sure, he was quite the smooth talker. He made you laugh at the non-typical dad jokes and slyly flirted in between questions about your life.
The remains of the Serpent crowd started to clear, each member said goodbye and goodnight as they stumbled out. In a matter of minutes you and FP were all alone.
As he continued the conversation, you began your closing shift duties. You started with the sticky counters. “So a bar maiden by night, what do you do during the day?” FP asked as he watched you wipe the bar down clean. “I work in Greendale.” “Two jobs huh?” He raised an interested eyebrow. “Do you ever sleep?” You giggled at his poor joke attempt. “Barely.”
The two of you locked eyes. For a moment the world was still.
FP sighed and got to his feet. You expected him to say goodnight but instead he reached over the bar and grabbed a damp cloth. You watched as he made his way around the tables and wiped them down one by one.
The jukebox was still playing classic rock songs as the two of you scrubbed the bar head to toe. One by one the chairs went up on the tables, FP lending you a helping hand. “You know you don’t have to do this.” You said, looking up at the older serpent. “It’s no problem sweetheart, I want to help.”
He finished with the chairs as you swept the floors and just like that what would’ve usually taken you an hour was finished in twenty minutes.
Leaving your apron behind your bar, you turned off the jukebox and the lights before locking up behind you.
“Thank you.” “Can I drive you home?”
FP handed you a helmet which you took without hesitation. He helped you tighten it under your chin and as his hand brushed against your cheek the butterflies in your stomach jumped once again.
He hopped on his bike, and gave you his hand to ease you onto the machine.
“Hold on tight sweetheart.”
The wind rushed through your hair and you couldn't help but smile. Your arms wrapped tightly around FP’s strong muscular chest, your chin rested on his shoulder as he made his way through the town. You wished the trip would last forever. A feeling of pure happiness overcame every inch of your body.
FP cut the engine outside of your home. He waited until you were off before hopping down himself, taking the helmet off of you.
Like a gentleman he walked you to your door.
“It was nice talking with you tonight sweetheart.” He smiled, his gaze wandered up and down your body until finally locking on your lips. He hesitated for a moment which was a strange feeling as FP never found himself second guessing anything.
“Same time tomorrow?” He asked with a smile on his face. “Might have you polishing glasses tomorrow.” You teased. FP smirked, “Whatever you want sweetheart.”
He leaned in slowly and placed a soft kiss on your cheek.
