I've started experimenting with some frame interpolation software. I want it on just enough to smooth out my LCD.
I hate the way new TVs always use aggressive frame interpolation and it makes everything look like a daytime soap opera. I don't need to watch things at 120 fps, thank you.
An LCD screen has a refresh rate of 60hz, or 60 frames per second. Movies are filmed at 24 fps. Since the screen is refreshing 60 times a second, but the movie only refreshes 24 times a second, this can cause some blurriness or tearing. This is most noticeable when things move fast or when the camera pans quickly. Frames are sometimes shown twice, sometimes they are shown three times, and sometimes they frame can change in the middle.
Frame interpolation tries to smooth things out by creating additional frames in between existing frames, rather than showing the same frame twice. Here's an example picture:
This technique can result in a much smoother viewing experience, but if over done it can make movies look terrible. Movies aren't intended to have higher framerates, this is why aggressive frame interpolation makes them look terrible.
When people buy a new TV, it's usually set up to produce as many frames as possible. This is because new TVs have 120hz or even 240hz. When people are in a store, they will see the big new TV with 240hz showing off insanely smooth video, and they will buy it over the regular 60hz. What most people don't understand is that movies, even high-definition blu-rays, are still only have 24 fps. Trying to force 120 or 240 fps on something filmed at 24 fps can make it look really silly.
Anyway, I'm testing out some software that called SVP (http://www.svp-team.com/wiki/Main_Page) that allows me to customize frame interpolation. Right now it's doubling the frames to 48 fps (the speed that the Hobbit is going to be filmed at). It's enough to smooth out the issues on an LCD screen, but it doesn't go far enough to make things like bizzare.
Anyway, I'm gonna go play The Old Republic now.
