Berto Rivera asks the young woman he's just met in the shoe shop out on a date. No, he hasn't asked her her name.
Living Rivera Headcannons
Despite not being twins, Berto and Enrique had a similar dynamic to Oscar & Filipe when they were kids. As they got older, they grew more into their own personalities, but they’ll still give each other that look that says they’re thinking the exact same thing.
Rosa loves to read and started a booktube channel when she was in high school.
Tia Gloria is the cool aunt the kids go to with problems they’re embarrassed to tell their parents about. For example, she helped Abel impress his first crush and got him ready for his first date. She also convinced his mom not to take pictures.
Tia Carmen is a camera fiend. She will take pictures of everything. Though some of them wind up unflattering (she has the uncanny ability to snap a picture right when you’re mid-chew) they’re grateful for her numerous scrapbooks.
During the Rivera’s legal battle with the de la Cruz estate, Rosa took an interest in law. She went to college to double major in business and law and eventually went on to become the family/business lawyer. She also takes on copyright disputes for small-time artists.
Papa Franco was an athlete when he was younger, specifically a track star. He broke several records despite being the shortest person on the track and don’t you forget it. He also swears up and down that Elena was his biggest fan and only went to the event to watch him. Elena denies it, but still has the gold medal he gave her when they started going out.
Shapeshifter AU: So what animals would the other Riveras change into? I like to imagine that most of them are felines like Imelda but then Miguel is born and he's a coyote like Papá Héctor.
Mostly felines, yes, with the exception of Miguel.
The twins, like Imelda, could change into Jaguars. They are spotted jaguars rather than a black jaguar, but their markings are identical so even as animals they are twins.
Coco could turn into an ocelot. She was very fast on her feet and quite elegant. When she ran she almost looked like she was dancing.
Julio’s and Rosita’s animal was a bobcat, a rather small one but still quite noticeably a bobcat.
Victoria, like her mother, could turn into an ocelot, while Elena took after her father and changed into a bobcat.
Elena’s children could all turn into bobcats, none taking after Franco who could turn into a puma.
Luisa herself was a panther, while Carmen was a puma as well.
Abel took after Carmen, while Rosa and the twins took after Berto.
Miguel is the oddity in the family since he took neither the form of a bobcat nor that of a panther. Instead he took on the form of a mongrel (a cross between two breeds of dogs, in this case tho, I’d say he’s a cross between a coyote and a dog).
Socorro’s animal is still undetermined, but it’ll likely be some kind of canine as well.

95. “There’s no going back if we do this.”
“Do not rub it in, Franco.”
The man sighed, removing his hat and placing a hand on his wife’s shoulder. He could feel the bone through the soft fabric of her sleeve. His beloved had always been sharp as a take, but feeling the sharp edges of age reminded Franco of how little time she— the both of them— had left in this world.
“I am serious, mi cariña,” said Franco, giving her shoulder a squeeze. “No one is forcing you to do this.”
“No one but me,” Elena conceded, basket of warm bread tucked under her arm. “If I don’t swallow my pride and get this over with now, then I never will.” She sniffed, head held high. “Besides. This is not for my sake, but for our grandson’s.”
It was not often Franco found himself impressed. In his old age, he’d seen many hardships and triumphs. Smiles and tears. Yet here he stood, proudly striding in his golden years alongside his beloved wife, as impressed with her as he’d been the day he’d been gifted the best pair of boots in all of Mexico.
“He is very lucky to have such a wonderful Abuelita,” Franco laughed, slipping her arm through his, giving her gnarled knuckles a squeeze with a calloused hand.
“I will be sure to remind him of such when we get home,” Elena nodded, finally allowing her stiff shoulders to relax a fraction, leaning into Franco.
And with that, the elderly Riveras set off for Mariachi Plaza, arm’s full of peace offerings and apologies for every musician Elena had ever accosted with a shoe.
