On my way to visit the Statue of Liberty recently, in The Battery, I stopped by another torch-bearing figure. The allegorical female figure stands in front of the bust of Giovanni da Verrazzano who, in April 1524, became the first European known to have entered New York Bay. Sponsored by King Francis I of France, and sailing on his caravel, La Dauphine, Verrazzano named the area “Angoulême” in honor of the King. The statue by Ettore Ximenes was dedicated in October 1909.
