SALOMON VAN RUYSDAEL 1600/03 - 1670 Haarlem “River Scene with Ferry-Boat and Bastion” 1664 Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr A ferry approaches the quay. The ferryman pulls the boat along a rope in the water. Ruysdael's signature and the date appear on the boat. The churches and castles in Salomon van Ruysdael's paintings can seldom be identified. The village and the bastion in this painting look as if they are real places but it has proved impossible to identify them. Salomon and his brother were actually called De Goyer. GERRIT BERCKHEYDE Haarlem 1638 - 1698 “View on the Bakenessergracht with the De Passer en de Valk brewery” 1662 Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr With this beautifully balanced view of the Bakenessergracht, the young Berckheyde demonstrates his exceptional skills. Using his sense of light, form and rhythm, the painter creates great contrasts in his composition. While, on the sunny side of the canal, a maid dips her mop in the water, the shaded side is alive with activity. Beer barrels from the brewery are being loaded onto a boat, while the brewer gives the last instructions for transport. Haarlem was known for its many breweries.
