SALOMON VAN RUYSDAEL 1600/03 - 1670 Haarlem “River Scene with Ferry-Boat and Bastion” 1664 Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr A ferry approaches the quay. The ferryman pulls the boat along a rope in the water. Ruysdael's signature and the date appear on the boat. The churches and castles in Salomon van Ruysdael's paintings can seldom be identified. The village and the bastion in this painting look as if they are real places but it has proved impossible to identify them. Salomon and his brother were actually called De Goyer. They changed their name to that of their father's castle, Ruisschendael. (This writeup is taken from the description at the museum.)
