We're taking a stroll down memory lane this week with some photos from the archives of the law school's former home, Fraser Hall!

In 1928, the law school moved from Pattee Hall to what would be known as Fraser Hall. By the 70s, the law school was outgrowing the space, as evidenced by the first 4 photos here, which feature some pointed captions (one student’s “subterranean nook” is a personal favorite). In 1978, the new building on West Bank was completed, and we’ve been here ever since. The last two pictures show Fraser in 1929.

The Law School quickly ~outgrew~ Fraser Hall, which was built to house the school in the 1920s. 

By the 1970s, the building was practically bursting at the seams. This photo was one of many taken to help campaign for more space. The caption (not pictured) reads: “LOW CEILING.”

From Fraser to Mondale: Happy New Years! It’s time for a new building in the new year, but before we transition to Mondale Hall here is Fraser Hall bursting at the seams. Every little nook and cranny is being used for storage, studying, and staff workspaces. Some of these photos were used to help make the case to the state legislature that a new building was desperately needed. So with that, let’s say goodbye to Fraser Hall, and get ready to welcome something new...

From Fraser to Mondale: This week we’re going to be taking a look at the inside of Fraser Hall. Today we have pictures of the building during off hours or low traffic periods, while later in the week we’ll show Fraser Hall when it’s bustling with activity and activity.

From Fraser to Mondale: 2018 marks 40th anniversary of the University of Minnesota Law School’s current home, Walter F. Mondale Hall. As we near 2018 we’ll take a look back at our previous home Fraser Hall, named for Dean Everett Fraser. The building which would be named in his honor was opened in a dedication ceremony on April 3rd 1929, and was designed to accommodate a student body of 300 students with 21 faculty. Post-war enrollment quickly lead to a need for the building’s expansion, which was completed in 1956. Class sizes in the 1960s however quickly consumed the new space, which due to Fraser Hall’s restricted surroundings began a seven year project to secure a new home for the growing Law School.
