Tricks to Effective Time Management
We have all been told to use our time wisely. Every now and then, when we find ourselves swamped and barely halfway through our tasks so close to the deadline, we are reminded of all those occasions we have been told to manage our time. The busier we get, the more we tend to procrastinate. This is the perfect opportunity to reassess our work habits and finally get to learn some time management tricks. Controlling our time better will help us become more efficient and less stressed at the same time.
There are a lot of classic, which is to say obvious, time management tips that you can start with, just to get a good grasp on organizing your tasks. First, make it a habit to write down a to-do list to always remind you of all your responsibilities. Next, assess your tasks according to which ones are important and which are urgent. Attend to tasks which require greater effort, time, and attention first to get the difficult tasks over with. When you find yourself swamped with a big project, divide it into chunks to sort out which needs to get done first, and finish them one by one. Set time limits if you can, just so you know you’re not overspending on each assignment.
Don’t keep your email tab open on your browser the whole day. You might not realize it, but checking and responding to emails takes up so much of your time every chance it gets, so only do it whenever you need it, or set certain periods throughout the day to attend to it. Time management requires that you stop spending time on unnecessary things. Cut back on chit-chat with co-workers, don’t make unimportant phone calls, and lessen your Internet browsing time, especially if it’s for leisure. Always remember to get things done first before wasting time on mundane things.
Time management also means you schedule the allotment you give for every task or project to have enough breathing room or wiggle time – don’t set things to finish just right before you need it. Allow it to have a few days more, just so you can have spare time in case something goes wrong. Lastly, monitor your progress and see how much time each tasks need, so you can have a better grasp of your schedule. You can use a time tracker to do this.
