Can I just say that I agree with everything you said about Fred. I never understood why she was so popular. I mean, at first for me she was okay, but having everyone praise her all the time really bothered me. I hated that her character was mourned so much, meanwhile Cordelia's death was barely even mentioned. That ruined her for me. I never thought about the sexualizing of an innocent little girl, but you are so right. I dislike her even more now, so thanks for the valid points. :-)

It really bothers me how Cordelia's death is handled on the show, and well just how Cordelia/Charisma is treated in general in s4/5. And so it's all the more reason Fred getting three episodes devoted to her death is nauseating for me.

So, how come you don't like fred? I am mostly indifferent to her, but I am curious about your POV?

Oh gosh ok well there are many reasons that I dont like Fred. Some of them are character reasons, some of them are Joss reasons, and some of them are narative reasons.

My biggest issue with Fred is that she is portrayed as a little girl when she is actually a 30 year old woman. She wears pigtails and dresses like a 12 year old and while that would merely just be annoying to me she also then the focus of the big love triangle of the series. Wesley and Gunn are both obsessed with this “little girl” which I find very creepy. Not to mention every man on the show loves her whether platonic or not. Joss is portraying the childlike innocence as sexually attractive and I find that gross.

And I’ve had people tell me Fred acts that way because she was in Pylea for five years but in AWITW we see Fred when she is going off to Graduate School and she is clutching a toy rabbit and acting exactly as she does after Pylea. It’s who she is not an effect of pyela. And again that would just be annoying to me if it weren’t for the sexualization of it.

I also feel like her character is not very well written or consistent. One minute she’s a genius physicist and the next minute she’s an idiot. He builds her up as this sweet caring woman one minute and the next minute she’s turning on her friends (Wesley in Deep Down, Gunn in SuperSymmetry) Season 3 and 4 Fred are so vastly different and I’m always left wondering where exactly the personality change came from. And then season 5 Fred is tolerable, a somewhat medium of the two like he finally found his footing for her character. Too bad it took so long.

Those are my two major reasons. Then I have minor reasons for disliking her that aren’t really her fault, like I hate her accent, and that her coming into the show ruined Wesley and Gunn’s friendship (I know this isn’t her fault and I blame Wesley the most for this)

I just have a lot of anti Fred feelings and I could probably go on longer if I wasn’t watching Game of Thrones lol
