Written by blacklisted Nedrick Young (using the pseudonym Nathan E. Douglas) and Harold Jacob Smith, the part of Joker Jackson was originally offered to Robert Mitchum (who, at age 14, had served on an actual chain gang in Georgia after an arrest for vagrancy in 1931), who turned down the role, citing a major flaw in the film’s premise (a white prisoner and black prisoner would never be chained together in the segregated South, Mitchum argued).
Produced and directed by Stanley Kramer, the film was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier), Best Supporting Actor (Theodore Bikel), Best Supporting Actress (Cara Williams), and Best Editing (Frederic Knudtson).
The film received 2 Oscars, for Best Cinematography (Sam Leavitt), and Best Original Screenplay.
