I recently picked up a Toshiba Tecra 730XCDT laptop for the bargain price of £25 locally On paper it’s a fantastic retro gaming machine - Pentium 150MHz processor - 16MB RAM (Mine expanded to 144MB max) - 12.1″ active matrix TFT screen (no blurry games) - OPL3 SoundBlaster Pro compatible sound card - CD-ROM - External 3.5″ floppy drive It was also is fantastic condition. Very clean with minimal scratches or other damage.
However the previous owner had reinstalled it with Windows XP, which was a little too advanced for the poor beast. My Windows 98 CD didn’t want to install under XP, as it can’t downgrade the OS. So I decided to try installing Windows 95 from floppy disks to start with.
This meant using the external floppy drive, which unfortunately only seemed to work intermittently. I could hear it trying to read the disks, but it sounded like it was slipping.
I attempted to lubricate and clean the inside of the drive, along with checking that the band was still in good condition.
Even after all that it wouldn’t play ball. So I decided to change tactics and pop out the 2.5″ hard drive and connect it to my main PC to sort out.
Using the fantastic tool Rufus I was able to easily format the drive as FAT32 with FreeDOS to make it bootable.
I also copied over the Windows 98 installation CD onto the drive itself to make installing easy.
Under FreeDOS I had to use the setup /nm /is command line arguments in order to bypass the hardware checks.
After that I was home free and well on the road to getting the machine setup for it’s new retro gaming lifestyle
Things we didn’t know we needed: a PC that boots from vinyl.
