Today, April 22nd, 2016, marks 2 years since Gina left us. Throughout the month of April, all I could think about is, “I wish Gina could see Kobe’s final game, I wish I could see her reaction to him scoring 60. I wish I could see her”.

Gina was a huge Kobe Bryant and Los Angeles Lakers fan (as you can see above). When I began doing production work for the NBA almost 7 years ago, and soon after, directly work with the Lakers in the midst of their championship run, I had no idea that I would meet someone who would impact my life in such a unique way, and it took me a while to understand how much I impacted her life, as well.

From day one, I’ve been a Michael Jordan/Chicago Bulls fan. I’ve always been a Kobe Bryant fan, but I also found myself becoming a Laker fan, simply because our paths crossed thanks to her love for the team, and my interest in it. Yesterday, we lost Prince, and “Purple Rain” is so relevant to this post in every way. So, thank you, Purple and Gold.

At times, it has been difficult to watch both the NBA and NFL Playoffs in the years of her absence, but it has gotten easier. It’s just not the same. I/we miss everything about her.

Happy 28th Birthday to the woman whose impact is one of a kind to my life. We love and miss you, Gina. I’ll never be able to express fully what you mean to me when I talk to people about you. I don’t know how, but I never tire of trying. I know I’m not alone when I say this, as she has inspired and influenced many. I recently revisited two of our favorite films that we watched together (Wicker Park, Another Earth), and it made me miss your reactions whenever you were surprised, excited, or caught off guard by something. It’s one of a kind, just like you.

To my “Donna”:

In 7 days, it’ll be 1 year. I planned on posting my thoughts then, but I miss you so much and I guess I just felt like doing it now. Not a single day has gone by where I didn’t think or reminisce about you. In all my years on Earth, I’ve never felt such a lingering effect of devastation and confusion. I’ve ashamedly avoided contact with most of your friends and family simply because it’s too overwhelming at times. It’s like I’m fighting a never-ending battle between surreality and reality. I try mask it and continue to move forward, and I know I’ll get there, but for now, I often feel as hurt and puzzled as I did a year ago. I just keep it to myself. As my screenwriting partner, we’d stay awake all night, sharing ideas, philosophies, ambitions, and perspectives, but I never thought that someday, I’d be writing about you. We impacted each other lives so much over the years in many ways, but the difference is, you left your imprint on mine, the same way you did for so many others you’ve crossed paths with. You were one of the strongest, most intelligent and enlightened women I’ve ever known. You were my ultimate light, and you will forever be. From: your “Donnie”.
