I really thought Max sat there making up all the Supreme Being stuff like L. Ron Hubbard, til I finally came across a book that casually dropped in the fact that it was a standard Enlightenment concept since years before the Revolution. He really was like:

and English French Revolution Historians seized another opportunity to paint him as a monster.

There are moments I will never forget

It was that day in Year Two when I thought that perhaps evil was already yielding to virtue, surrounded by the universally expressed feelings of fraternal love and patriotic solidarity, when I, like thousands of others, was carried away and moved by sublime feelings and expressed my gratitude to the Supreme Being.

At that moment I was truly happy.

And I was also foolish, because I allowed my enemies to strike me in the most sensitive place of my heart. I let them see into my vulnerable soul, which I had exposed to the people, and they drove a thorn full of poison into it.

I knew my final battle was comming and even though I suspected how it would end, I was not going to give up just yet. The immense strength I felt in the people that day gave me much-needed hope.

All that strength is still present here, I feel it in each of you. And once you awaken it within you, you will be able to accomplish what we could not.
