Achtung!
The Friday Group gave Modiphius’ 2d20 Achtung! Cthulhu Quickstart a go last night. I’m going to pre-face this by saying I am a huge 2d20 fan, and am pretty biased towards it, so it’s no surprise I really enjoyed it. By the sound of it, so did everyone else.
Achtung! Cthulhu, for those that don’t know, is set during World War II, with the players taking on the role of agents working for Section M (Great Britain) or Majestic (U.S.A) as they battle Nazi agents in the Secret War. A war behind the war for the very fabric of reality.
As the name suggests it’s all about Lovecraftian Mythos creatures being summoned - or in the case of Innsmouth - being f*cked into existence.
The system and setting is very pulp, lots of Indiana Jones-esque one-liners and over-the-top action.
The Quickstart scenario is set in a small village in Rouen in France, the PCs parachute in after a message from a French Resistance fighter is cut short at the source.
If you’ve watched Overlord - or if you’re alive - you can see where the plot is going, I mean it is only a quickstart scenario, but it’s really enjoyable.
The PDF is really well-presented and laid out, the artwork is evocative and awesome. That being said, there was a fair amount of necessary content that was forgotten. Weapon Qualities that didn’t make it into the book, mechanics that are used in the Quickstart but how to actually use them, and a few other things. I know Quickstart’s are just the sample size portion, but you do need all the rules the Quickstart references in order to run.
I’d give it a solid 8/10 for the quality and quantity. The full rules come out on 9th March and I know at least I’ll be snatching them up.
P.S. Giving the Australian PC a Tactical Boomerang, is both funny and awesome when they crack two Nazi’s in the skull with it.
