Futuropia, du (très) classique Friese
Futuropia, du (très) classique Friese
Coucou mes p’tites patates glandouilleuses!

504
One of my favorite recent games is Friedemann Friese's 504; I finally review it on my blog:
So, I haven’t been blogging much of late. A factor is certainly that for the past few years, there just hasn’t been much going on in my traditional bailiwick of what I think of as “classical” hobbyist boardgames to inspire me to write. If you want to know my best gaming experience of recent times, that’s the Dracula Dossier, by a long shot.
504 has changed things, though. I don’t know if it’ll…

Designed by Friedemann Friese (Power Grid, Terra, Friday), 504 will be the second game to join The Great Designer Series by Stronghold Games. The series is meant to show off some of the best designers in the industry. The first game in the series, Porta Nigra is scheduled to be released later this year.
504 is actually 504 games in one due to its modular design. In 504, scientists have found a way to make alternate earths and have found 504 possibilities.
“This is a revolutionary game design for the hobby game industry,” said Stephen Buonocore, President of Stronghold Games. “It is an honor to be working with Friedemann Friese and his great company, 2F-Spiele, on such an ambitious and game-changing project.”
You play the explorers of these worlds, who must follow the laws of the world to succeed. There are nine different modules that can be mixed together: Pick-up & Deliver, Race, Privileges, Military, Exploring, Roads, Majorities, Production, and Shares.
To create a game, you’ll pick three different modules to create a world. Stronghold gave some examples in their press release:
A racing game that expands through exploration with technology improving the racing or exploration (World “253”).
An 18XX-style stock game with network building for income and production sites to provide workers for the road building (World “968”).
A wargame with a pick-up and deliver economy and bonus scoring from majorities (“World 417″).
Stronghold Games is hoping to publish 504 by November 2015, but the price has yet to be set. This edition will be debuted at Essen Spiel in Germany this October.
“My project 504 was not only hard work for 3.5 years, but it has been a dream of mine since I started to analyze game mechanics in the mid-90s”, said Friedemann Friese. “I’m happy to see my game at Stronghold Games next to a game that influenced my work a lot, Outpost. Stephen loved 504 from the first moment I showed it to him, so I believe my game is in good hands.”
Jess: I absolutely love this idea. I am a big fan of games with tons of replay value and with 504 possibilities, I can’t imagine how long it is going to take us to get through all of them. I can’t wait to see what other games Stronghold has in store for their The Great Designer Series!
