What are your thoughts on The Timeless Children¿

Oooh an ask! I have to admit I didn’t watch Classic Who and I’m not what you’d call a stickler for canon (still rooting for Donna to get brought back over here) so I’m not mad about the Timeless Children. Hoping Chibnall has an actual coherent plan for that (and a little nervous about how likely that seems to pan out), but I’d say I’m cautiously optimistic.

Lol, actually I don’t have any metas planned (except for maybe continuing my rewatch meta series over hellatus, but maybe I will actually truly for once take a couple weeks a complete break from tumblr, but I don’t know yet. We’ll see), because this season was so bad that I had nothing I really wanted or thought one needed to meta about. :) But thank you for your ask. xx

My insights on AU!Cas? :) I am afraid my opinion on that entire bit of the penultimate episode is a very unpopular opinion (as it is regarding the entire season and season finale), therefore it goes straight behind the cut.

I am not one to get all up in arms and rain on anyone’s parade or be unnescessarily mean, but I think Misha’s performance in that scene was frankly… horrible, I felt second hand embarassment tbh and I don’t say this just to be wanky, but it sadly was just cringeworthy to me - almost the entire season finale was too for me, so… it really might just be me.

But ignoring Misha’s imo truly bad performance there and just thinking about AU!Cas while also ignoring all the plot holes regarding his vessel and Jimmy Novak, etc.. to me it was absolutely unnescessary of the show to waste minutes on it. I get why they included it and why they thought it was “cool” or “shocking”, but to me it was actually neither, but just one more incident of way too many over the course of the season to highlight bad showrunning and writing.

I guess they wanted to drive the point home with AU!Cas how integral and important the Winchesters were in Castiel’s “coming of age” for lack of a better word and what/who he may have become if he was never assigned to save Dean from Hell: a soldier working for Michael and feeling delight in torture, etc. I guess they also wanted allude to how that Castiel may have also been subjected to mind wipes and reprogramming as our Castiel suffered under Naomi, but none of that was truly developed in the episode or explained or properly worked out. To me this face-off could have been much better (like so much else this season) if the millions other things introduced had just been cut away and they would have concentrated on a few bits and truly worked with them. Castiel meeting his other self and being horrified by it, it starting to have an effect on him, spurring thoughts and memories within him. All that would have made for an interesting story spanning over a couple of episodes, with how it was handled now it was just quick quick, kill and kill and didn’t work for me at all.

I get that they wanted to use this as a callback to Cas in the Empty and how that entity approached him in his own form and he needed to “face” himself in a way, but imo Castiel killing off this dark/shadow self of himself in order to fully drive the point home that Castiel completely leaves his “angelic” ties and his past and what he could have become/been behind could have been handled way better.

Sorry for the short reply and the very critical words, but Dabb’s showrunning is just a big old pile of disappointment for me. *sighs*

Is it just me or is Cas' new tie and trench coat darker than his old tie and trench coat? (also new tie is no longer tied backwards than the old one in S4, idk... halp) What's the meaning of thiiiiiss???

Yes, Castiel’s coat is definitely a new one. It is way more similar to his initial trenchcoat - or rather Jimmy Novak’s. I had written about wanting a new kind of coat for Cas at the end of S12 (see here) and the symbolic meaning it would have for me personally. Now I had hoped for something to set him apart more drastically from his former “uniform”, but I do like that he is back in the trenchocat resembling the S4 just in a darker shade.

I personally find that fitting colour wise in so far as Castiel has gone through a whole lot of dark patches since then, so even if he came back an angel (though decidedly depowered if his lack of healing abilities are anything to go by (I would rather prefer it if Cas was close to human power wise anyway).

I can of course only guess what the clothing departments reasons were for Castiel’s “new” coat, but I think for one it does mark a new chapter for him. His shadow!self (Empty!Entity!Cas) made him relive some of his “worst hits” and also in the most superficial sense “addressed” Castiel’s growing depression and feelings of inadequacy. I feel like with the show confronting Castiel with all his past mistakes and traumas was a means to have him grow and heal and move on to become more himself and more in tune with who he is.

If I just looked at the coat as such and how it resembles the S4 coat, I’d say one may read it as a hint of Castiel developing a bit more in that direction of Castiel again - meaning a character with a lot more edge than he has shown in recent seasons, but of course the change in costime may also only be used to allude to Cas “not being Cas”, but housing the Empty!Entity as well (which I don’t hope to be the case, because it would be a repeat of a repeat - plus, if Cas turned out to not be himself - again - I think it would be the final straw for Dean).

I guess, we’l have to wait and see, but this is how I personally would analyze Castiel’s new old outfit. :)

I think while on the surface it may look as if these two statements are mutually exclusive, I actually don’t think they are. What Gabriel says in S5 - “as it is in Heaven, so it should be on Earth” - to me is more of a general description of how Heaven and Earth are much more alike, with the fighting and the drama and the deception and the betrayal whereas Lucifer’s line in S11 - “what happens in Heaven, stays in Heaven” - seems much more situational. Not everything that happens in Heaven needs to become a topic on Earth - and at the same time this kind of “withholding information” or even maybe slight “manipulation” certainly in itself is something that happens the very same way on Earth when people agree on something better not making the news, but staying under the covers - basically that’s what most police officers the Winchesters had a run in with and who helped them with a case operated by, kind of like “what happened in Oz, stays in Oz”, etc...
