“Is there…” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Is there a way we can try again?”

That was enough to break his neutral expression, but the emotion on his face wasn’t hope. It wasn’t happiness.

It was resignation.

“Julie, what reassurance do we have that we won’t end up exactly where we were then?” he asked, breaking her loose hold on his hand. “How do we know we aren’t going to break apart again?”

Julie deflated. “I guess we don’t.”

“Goodbye, Jules.”

She didn’t look up as Luke left the cafe.
