Shin Sekai Yori "From the New World" (SUB) — Episodes 15, 21, 24, 25

These last few episodes of Shin Sekai Yori, were truly of a different nature and such a plot turn from the seemingly peaceful yet eerie setting that the children were in, and which mimicked a situation of monkeys kept passive—as the children were being domesticated to keep their powers in check. Despite the turn-around, it still was as philosophically stimulating about the nature of human nature, natural rights, and the nature of personhood.

In these past four episodes, the increased focus on the society of queerats and their relations to the humans of Cantus powers provided such a slight yet deep commentary and displayed themes of the deeply rooted philosophical question of the nature of personhood and who has the right to have natural rights.

In the previous episodes, the queerats were seen as having such respect of humans with Cantus powers to the point of revering them as gods. This attitude was reflected and continued in the fifteenth episode in how Squealer revered the two (former) children as his gods. This gave a sort of continuity from the plot of the previous episodes despite both the children (henceforth now referred to as adults) and the queerats being bigger than the previous time we saw them in last post regarding Shin Sekai Yori.

However, the disconnect and the shift in themes in the show started when the adults were asking Squealer to bring them to their colony’s queen (which they supposedly met prior). It was then revealed that their queen was incapacitated by the colony themselves after having set up their own unions and representative assemblies, which mimic that of the democracies in which we inhabit in our world. The philosophical part comes in with how Squealer was describing the reason for the incapacitation of the queen (but still keeping her alive) in how she was being tyrannical and neglectful of the lives of her followers (especially those that were working to improve and further the quality of the state of the colonies). It was to this end that they formed unions and established a new government, but still keeping the queen alive to reproduce for the colonies since she is their mother. This is a sort of ethical grey area in which the life and dignity of the queen as an independent agent was neglected by those that sought her accountable (as even the accused have rights), but it also mimics that of the philosophies of the social contract and how the queen betrayed such when she started being tyrannical and furthering the destruction of her own peoples.

Another point of the anime could be seen as a commentary of personhood, human rights, and the ideas of genocide/racial superiority in more deeply analyzing the class relationship between the queerats and the human with Cantus powers. As is seen throughout the anime, the queerats were seen as lower in status than that of humans with Cantus, despite the humans supposedly recognizing their independence and autonomy. This underlying inequality and class tension resulting in Squealer, which first revered the humans as gods, to amassing armies and warring against them to wipe the humans out for the good of the queerats’ kind. This brings up the question of personhood, the idea of who or what should be included within a moral community and be considered with an ethical lens—most particularly the question of the personhood of the queerats and if they are deserving of the affording of human rights. Whilst I can go on for a much, much longer tangent of the philosophical ethical definitions of persons and the rights they should be afforded but that is not the main point of this essay (in the time I have left…).

The anime also slightly touches upon the balances of power and theories on international (or, in this case, inter-special) relations and war. The concept of war and the rules of war was touched upon when the queerats and the adults first approached the other queerat colony in their quest to find their friends—while Squealer was looking to completely obliterate the colony, Saki maintained a cool mind and made sure that the actions taken were not crossing a certain line despite the conflict they found themselves in. Furthermore, the concept of the balance of power is also emphasized in how the differing species, such as the humans and the queerats, were continuously trying to find a way to maintain, or overcome, their social status’ vis-à-vis each other. This draws upon the theory of realism in international relations in which each state/nation is focused on the maintenance of power in relation to each other and their neighbors.

At the ending of the anime, with the trial for Squealer's crimes, there comes a problem with the rights of the accused and concerns over cruel and unusual punishment. Even the concept of capital punishment is something highly questionable in our society, but the punishment of eternal hell for Squealer for his crimes of war against humanity—with the use of Cantus powers to ensure that he does not die from having every nerve cell of his body being in excruciating pain. This is their idea of a punishment worse than death—the peace of rest. The means of punishment is rather for revenge rather than for the purpose of lessons learned or justice being dealt out. Violence is being fought back with even more violence.

Lastly, another theme I find in the anime is the fact that entire genomes were manipulated to maintain a class delineation and to keep the lower classes in their place (such as the queerats). The queerats were right. Squealer was right—THEY ARE HUMANS. Their genomes were messed with in order to maintain a status quo: this is the basic premise of eugenics. Which is, arguably, plainly and obviously unethical as it disregards the agency and autonomy of individual agents.

All of these themes are heavily present in the political philosophy and the execution of international relations and of political rights within our world, today. These are relevant conversations that can and should and are happening in our global society and in addressing the inherent inequalities we find between nations and domestic classes today.

Shin Sekai Yori "From the New World" (SUB) — Episodes 1, 2 ,4, 12

Words cannot describe how confused yet fascinated I am with the events that have transpired over these few episodes in Shin Sekai Yori. The setting of the anime attempts to give a sort of peaceful aura to how its society and buildings are structured, and yet there is great tension and an underlying ominousness that pervades throughout the world in which the children inhabit.

The first episode leads us grasping for answers as we see regular school children on a seemingly normal day—which was shown in a very ominous fashion with its use of colors and sounds that mimicked a fever dream—suddenly exhibit dark expressions and grossly intense powers with people dying everywhere around them. This is what I inference to be the start of the rise of those with psychokinesis (or PK) during this “ancient” era of civilization around the year 2011.

Following these scenes immediately after is what would be considered the future to us but the “present” time of the setting of the anime. In this world and in this time, the people were freely using their powers and are seemingly being educated to harness it. The institutions of these places are given names that exhibit connotations of peace and harmony in their flourishing world, which is highly juxtaposed to the first scenes to which we were introduced at the start of the anime.

However, there is still an eerie perversion to everything in this society, despite what the names of their institutions suggest. The rumors (and the eventual proof of the reality of such rumors) of children disappearing, of wild beasts and spirits and macabre entities that strike fear into people, religious cults that control the human spirit, a holy boundary line, and clandestine adults. I cannot say that I fully understand what is going on but I am eager to find out more about this place.

What I can say for now is that this does heavily bring out some ideas from the provided text: Wild Child. The premise of the text is mostly based upon the rise of the image of the "wild child" in Japanese society in the late 1900s near the turn of the century. The idea that kids were turning strange and that the culture of the Japanese child psyche is being perverted—especially after the killings by a Junior High student known by the moniker "Shōnen A". This eerily draws up the images of the first scenes of the anime with children going berserk and the number of murderous crimes they committed.

However, in this society in which such things are prevented, it draws me back to the reality of the modern age in which education is utilized by society to domesticate children in such a way that they are useful and proactive citizens in society—much like what the institutions of the anime are trying to do with the PK-wielding children. Whether it be through the structure of public education or through organized religion, children are to be educated and guided in such a way that they are molded into citizens of our society.
