They had to close early again. It was something that had been happening more and more often, whether it due to staff shortages, no customers, or just her uncle having to leave early to tend to her grandmother, the diner's doors didn't stay open for long. The family had begun to wonder if it was even worth it anymore or if they should just let the doors lock permanently. Another thing to lose.
She had urged her uncle to go when they got a call from Grandma's home nurse. The older woman had been declining rapidly and could hardly remember who her family was, let alone who her medical staff was. Medical staff we also don't have fucking money for. And that's how she found herself here: going through the entire end of shit processes by herself. Menus were wiped down and organized, tables scrubbed until her hands felt like they were going to fall off, kitchen organized to Uncle Bruce's most specific requests. Her current task was wiping down the kitchen counters. The light sound of the bell echoed through the deadly quiet restaurant. Fuck. Her eye caught the edges of neon from the 'OPEN' sign, still buzzing with harsh light. Their hours were technically still going on and she had forgotten to turn off the goddamned sign. "I'm sorry!" Pippa began, quickly trying to wash the cleaner off her hands. The woman rushed out of the kitchen, hands still drying off with a towel. "We're closed. Owner had an emergency and I forgot to-" the last word caught in her throat, practically choking her. Familiar eyes locked with hers. The entirety of her twenties lay in them. And they belonged to the person who ripped everything away from her. "Get out." the words were monotone, her face was stony, but her dark eyes ignited with hate. She didn't care to question why he was there; she wanted him gone. "Now, Abel."
