The truth was- though this particular truth was one Marius made no effort to share whatsoever- Damocles really wasn’t all that bad.
In some ways, Marius admired him. He didn’t let him know that, of course, but judging by the looks some of his brats had been sending him lately he thought perhaps his feelings weren’t as unknowable as he would like to believe. It hadn’t gone anywhere, of course. He hadn’t allowed it. But Damocles had been his faithful follower nonetheless, following him and his collection of children on their trek across what had once been a country but was now just an expanse of crumbled civilization, home to a seemingly endless amount of living dead.
Of all the ways for the fucking world to end. Really.
They’d grown... close, he supposed, over the last few months. It was inevitable, really. Damocles had wormed his way under Marius’ skin, even just in a small way. He supposed that was only natural. After all, they’d been together for months now. They’d been taking care of each other, sharing mattresses from time to time, watching out for the kids. When you were all too aware that you and yours were amongst some of the last surviving members of your species- and a collection of those who apparently weren’t exactly inclined to procreate and repopulate the earth.... well. Each life became valuable, or some mumbo jumbo like that. Personally Marius was no more fond now of the human population at large than he had been when it had been an actually large population. He was aware there was something twisted in him, in his lack of empathy or compassion, but ultimately- though he loathed that the children he loved would have an upbringing wrought with hardship- he just didn’t give a fuck that most of the world was gone.
There was a part of him, some ugly, dark part, that actually enjoyed slaying the undead. Liked the high that accompanied jerking back from a rotting, snapping jaw, just barely missing flesh, the high that came from bashing a body ‘til it stopped moving.
He liked feeling powerful, and he’d always had this thing for danger.
They’d been out on a supply run, and that was one thing Marius was unabashedly grateful to Damocles for- the fact that the other man could accompany him while they scavenged, providing not only backup but peace of mind that his kids were safe and sound where he’d left them. Dancing with death with himself was one thing, but having to stress over the kids- that was another. Not to say he didn’t fret over Damocles’ wellbeing from time to time, but Marius did trust him to be somewhat capable of taking care of himself. Case in point, the two of them had just taken out a swarm of twenty- something, the tip of the iceberg that was surely contained in the city they were on the outskirts of, and he didn’t think either of them had sustained so much as a goddamn scratch.
It was exhilarating.
Marius laughed as he stepped over a felled body, eyes bright as he swiped at a splatter of blood on his cheek. “That was fun,” He chimed, voice lilting. “Don’t you think?” The smile on his lips turned lopsided, more of a smirk than anything- he was well aware not everyone had a kink for near- death experiences the way he did, but whatever. He analyzed Damocles’ face carefully, his chest still heaving from exertion, skin shiny with sweat.
He might plead insanity later. It might not even be a lie. He was exactly sure what the fuck he was doing or why- he just knew he wanted to, was pretty fucking confident Damocles wanted him to, so why the fuck not?
His weapon hit the floor with an unceremonious clatter, and then his hands were fisting in Damocles’ jacket, rough but playful as they hauled the other man’s body in against his own. At the same time, he was still moving him backwards, still moving to cage Dam in against the weathered brick wall behind him. His body was a long line of heat against Marius’, firm but oh- so- pliable, and Marius bit playfully at his neck while he wedged a thigh between Dam’s.
“Thought it was gonna get me for a second there,” He breathed out. “But look at you, swooping in like some kind of fucking hero. You think you’re my knight in shining armor?” He asked, talking nonsense he was sure, but god. His head was spinning, pulse jumping, every part of his body still strung high. “Guess I should thank you, yeah? Give you a token. I don’t have a pretty embroidered handkerchief for you to take, but I might do you one better.” His words were teasing, still breathless, and the kiss he gave Damocles wasn’t careful or sweet at all. It was hungry and hot and messy, just a hint of teeth in Dam’s lower lip before Marius pulled back, a strand of saliva connecting them for just a moment before it snapped. Marius’ hands were still holding Dam in place, controlling, but not so much so that the man couldn’t move, couldn’t get away if he wanted. “'S’that work?” He asked, teasing, eyes once more analyzing the other.
