Of course that the cheeky little bastard snuck up on John while he had his back turned to him. But, unlike Pico, or gun's tacky element of surprise and his habit of popping up unannounced... Captain, was almost always doing ordinary stuff. Same goes today. John was tampering with a lump of old machinery, cleaning it out or whatever, in a way that looked oddly casual. As if he does it frequently.
