“That it is!”, came an amused chuckle. And, without further formality, the sphinx put her weight upon her haunches, using one free paw to keep a chord of vine pinned against the stone wall while the other pulled it taught. This made biting through them relatively easy and this procedure continued until the botanist was free.
“Now, is there anything else I can help you with, less you end up in another snare of your own creation?”
who: Himiko & Hana @disruptedlogic
where: Himiko's Apartment
when: New Year's Day
Entering the new year with a messy apartment and Himiko did not care. There's glitter on the floor from after the party. Christmas light were still lite up, even when is January but this was her place and she made the rules. She was pretty sure she and Hana had dropped their shoes somewhere down the lobby. As Polaroids of them from the night before laid scattered on her marble floor. Some with strangers photobombing, others with friends who had also partied the end of 2023 with them.
New Year's Eve, for Himiko was about surrounding herself with her nearest and dearest whilst also pulling off an epic party for Abyss. No rest for the wicked is what they always say. How foolish would it be to not be at her own club on one of the biggest nights of the year or hold the biggest parties of the year? She knew that it would be a missed business opportunity. Abyss was her one true love after all. There was no place to be.
But come, January 1st, Himiko did the rarest thing she could. Take a day off. Not often was she away from Abyss but she knew the importance of taking some down time. December...December had been a heavy month with the buzz around EOs. Of course her backroom business, would have some effect with that. Needless to say, also discovering her best friend was back from the dead was an emotional wave to ride. Still, Himiko held it together, smiles, partying and Abyss along with the festive season. The women did not stop. Until now.
January 1st, in the a silkiest pajamas, feet up on her white leather couch under piles of blankets, legs entangled with her best friend, Hana and head resting on her shoulder. Snacks laid on the tape with the cheesiest romcom movies on the tv. A rare moment where Himiko came undone. "Happy New Year, Hana," Himiko mumbles exhaustion evident in her voice. Repeating the phrase even later in the day.
Serena first spotted the humanoid as she was making her way out to the front of the temple, seeking to enjoy the sun on a warm afternoon. That was, until the sound of shuffling caught her attention and…something could just be seen moving along the roof. Her first instinct was to fly up and check it out herself, however, she wasn’t a particularly stealthy flyer. Whatever it was would notice her presence shortly after take off.
Instead she rounded the the side of the temple, noticing something peculiar in the process: that the thick, interwoven vines that clung to the wall had a clear trail of flowers missing. The sphinx investigated further, taking the scent of the flowers in. Mulling over her botany, she identified it to be a type of wisteria that thrived in direct sunlight but was more difficult to find in these parts then one would expect.
Amber eyes followed the trail upwards until she spotted the movement once more. At this better angle, she could make out wisps of pink hair, they were bipedal, and… they possessed animalistic ears? Huh. How curious. Perhaps a subspecies of huldra? Either way, she was less than pleased with someone scaling her temple.
“Excuse me! Would you mind not roaming around the top of my home? If you fall that-”
The sound of skidding cut her off and, like a living work of irony, the climber’s foot slipped out from under some crumbling stone. They proceeded to slide down and over the edge of the roof. Both feet managed to get caught in the web of vines, detaching the flora from the wall. Thankfully for the climber, the intricate system of roots slowed her downward momentum, having her roll and become positively entangled before finally stopping to hang in front of the sphinx.
Groans left the individual as they tried to get their bearings…their now up-side-down bearings. Her eyes squinted open, hazily taking the creature in front of her in, “Ow…I think I hit my head.”
“Obviously not extensively considering you are still able to speak coherently.”
Serena watched as those eyes now flew wide open and, after taking her in with clearer vision, began to struggle to get free. Not that it did much good against the vines that held her fast. And this continued in vain for a minute or two until the reality of the situation seemed to catch up with the climber. “…I think I’m stuck.”, she finally, a sheepish smile crossing her features.
“It would appear so…”
The silence hung for a moment, the two simply starring at one another; one bemused while the other was strewing in the awkward silence. “So…what’s your name?”, she said with a nervous chuckle.
Finally, someone with the decency to start an introduction. It only took someone literally bound at her mercy to do so. But, awkward tone or no, they both exchanged names and other formalities before the silence settled in, “So…um…Serena? Could I get some help getting down?”
“I could, however, I have to admit that I find this rather entertaining.”
“Oh…erm…maybe something else could be done for fun instead?”
The sphinx’s ears laid flat as she thought about it, tongue tapping at the roof of her mouth, “On various avenues I bring what is needed, delving deeper and expanding farther in my exploits. However, seek me out and you may just find where your own origins lie. What am I?”.
“…a riddle? Why a riddle?”
“I mean, I suppose I could always bat at you to see how far those vine will let you swing.”
Riddle it was.
