It is February 2026 and we now live in a Bizarro World where Sony just did a killer State of Play after Nintendo did a weak Direct.
I never thought I'd see the day. "State of Play" presentations are KNOWN for sucking rocks. Nintendo Directs are KNOWN for impressing routinely or being "kinda good" at worst. But LO! Here we are.
To be fair, the Nintendo Direct was a "Partner Showcase," which are always pretty mid compared to full-on normal Direct presentations. But DAMN that State of Play...
Okay, let's start with the biggest news: KONAMI.
Over a decade after we first started saying "Fuck Konami", Konami is still working hard to stage its comeback. Its reputation is still pretty deep in the sewer for its bad behavior towards both employees and customers in the mid-2010s, but through careful usage of outside studios, they are attempting to turn things around. And today, they brought a lot to the table to make their case.
I have been talking for AGES about how much Konami has been leaving money on the table by ignoring Castlevania. Well, they finally are staging its much-overdue comeback. I literally SCREAMED and WHOOPED when the reveal game. Does this game look pretty cool? HELL yes. Does it look insanely hard due to its ridiculous speed and meticulous combat? HELL yes. Is it waaaaay too late for this? HELL yes. The fact that Netflix ran six seasons of a hit series over eight years, is now sadly SEEMINGLY over and done, and Konami never once put out a real newgame in all that time is frankly, ***FUCKING EMBARRASSING***.
Okay, but here's stuff I'm happy about: First, we seem to be back in the classic (non-Lords of Shadow) — i.e. the best — timeline. Second, it looks like we're getting a female Belmont warrior canonized; the online blog announcement says we play as the "successor to Trevor Belmont." There is no canonical name/identity for his kid(s) yet (only an internal Konami memo that gives a rough family tree has ever spoken of Trevor's children), so they can make up whoever they like. Third, we already have gotten a glimpse of a new battle against Death, and I LOVE Death fights in these games. Fourth... how insane is it that 2026 is now poised to gift us both a new Castlevania AND a new Bloodstained?!
An observation: This is announced for PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and... Switch 1. Whazzat? No 'Switch 2 Edition'? Y'all serious?
Wait, the producer just said this is the first game they have lined up to celebrate Castlevania's 40th anniversary?! The FIRST?!?! (Oh god that has to mean that the long-desired remaster/re-release of the N64/PS2 games is on the way, right? Surely?)
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 is on the way! With... three games? Two main games plus one bonus. The first "Master Collction" gave us FIVE main games plus TWO bonus games. SEVEN games... well, er... one of those bonuses was a downgraded port of one of the four primaries, so maybe that's six games? Either way, going from six/seven games to three games is a pretty huge fucking comedown!!! ... But I mean, also, these three games in one package is still a pretty excellent deal, and I realize that. And since my personal favorite Metal Gear, Peace Walker, is included in this set... yeah, I'll probably still have to get it either way.
...but it's been noted by many that Portable Ops not being included is a shame/mistake (agreed), and that begs the question of whether there could still be a "Master Collection Vol. 3." Sure, you can put Ground Zeroes/The Phantom Pain in a new collection now that it's over a decade old (!), but what ELSE would go into such a collection? Maybe they just do the MGSV games and Portable Ops, and there's Metal Gear Ac!d 1 + 2 as bonus games? but that seems highly unlikely since they're giving us so little in Vol. 2, so why would they suddenly give us significantly more in 3???
And is there any hope of ever seeing "The Twin Snakes" FINALLY get re-released at long last? Even if it has to be Nintendo-exclusive.... surely THEN it'd be doable.... come ON, Konami. Plz?
I’m a bit worried Konami might be pushing Silent Hill TOO hard. Consecutive years with major releases? Idk guys… you risk draining your audience’s interest ala Star Wars…
Onto other Konami games: Darwin's Paradox still looks cute as heck and fun. Rev.Noir is... idk, I'm not getting much from that trailer that seems like it'd interest me. The combat looks fun, sure, but... there's just nothing in the story/characters to draw me in rn. Could definitely be cool, who knows. But for me, 'tis currently a Rev.Snore. Sorry.
Other "State of Play" Stuff:
Star Wars: Galactic Racer might just be a worthy follow-up to the pod racing games and also a decent modern counterpart to Wipeout??? Maybe???
Why are the Kena games as gorgeous as theatrical animated movie? LOVE how this follow-up looks. I still haven't played the first, but it's now become a PRIORITY. I remember how much its trailers always impressed me. God, my backlog is SUCH a problem...
Pragmata continues to look wonderful. Diana is so adorable, and I expect her relationship with Hugh to just be heartwarming AF. I just played the demo on Switch 2 last week, had a great time.
I've never been much of a fan of the old Greek-style God of War games, but "Sons of Sparta" looks pretty killer TBH. I hear it's even a Metroidvania? And I've always deeply loved that genre.
How I feel when I've walked into the bathroom with socks on and the floor is wet
Hey uhhhhh Konami?
Can you make something original for once?
Can you do SOMETHING good with one of the TITANS OF SURVIVAL HORROR THAT YOU HAPPEN TO OWN???
Literally copy Capcom. Make remakes and original SH games. Or better yet, fucking sell the rights to Capcom because that section in RE8 did Silent Hill better than you could ever hope to do.
Stop draining the life from SH2 and putting it into a garbage "game" like Ascension.
I am only holding out hope for the SH2 remake because Ito and Akira are involved.
But Jesus Christ guys. This "game" is the most predatory shit I have ever seen. Just make a TellTale version of Silent Hill if you wanted audience choices to be canon.
I am so fucking agitated right now. You fucking canceled Silent Hills and left the franchise to rot for 8 fucking years just so you could revive its rancid corpse for profit.
This thing has piss poor writing. Piss poor voice acting for the most part (I'm sorry to the VAs, I really am, I know they have a bad script to work with). Piss poor animation. And a piss poor execution.
I just... ooooooofgjgjgj. Fuck man. It hurts to see a beloved franchise screaming out in agony like this.
At least the concept art is cool. I guess. Ugh.
Courtesy of the makers of the newest Silent Hill "game" (sorry, "interactive series"). Presented without context. None needed.

Cursed Thought: Since Team Rocket is the Pokemon universe’s equivalent of the Yakuza, complete with running gambling operations, you think they run the Pokemon universe’s version of Konami?
HUH????
I dont know if you heard about this but? I thought itd be hella unlikely due to separation of Kojima and Konami? I dunno how to feel bout this.
These dropped at the same time. People love rumors lol.
As someone who likes Kojima more than for just whatever series he’s working on, I would prefer any rumors involving Konami stay rumors tbh.
eFootball 2022 is an impressively bad new direction for the formerly beloved Pro Evolution Soccer series. Konami has once again provided the world with something truly terrible to make delighted fun of.
More than that, however, it's yet another example of how so-called "AAA" publishers continue to screw up their precious "live service" games by rushing undercooked trash to market.
Oh, Konami, whatever will we do with you?
