so you were female Hamlet in that production, right? do you mind if i ask what that was like? what sort of changes were made to the text, if any?
Hi! Yes! Little me. It was great, but it was very difficult and at times felt a little too big for me, but the way it was received made me feel really pleased.
I didn’t watch too many other adaptations of it because I didn’t want to play (her) as a manly type - I wanted it to be very honest. The only script changes were people calling me “she/her” - “Lord” Hamlet still stayed the same. Polonius may have interpreted some of his interactions with Ophelia differently, but the words still stayed the same. Nobody seemed overtly bothered by the fact that Ophelia and Hamlet were in a lesbian relationship because of “the gay thing”, which was brilliant, because it wasn’t a distracting theme.
Hope that helps :)
