A full-fledged member
The Word of the Day is “full-fledged.” But before I get there, an overly long preamble. Some of you know that I am a duly elected member of the Board of Finance in my tiny town. I joined the board figuring I might be able to lower my taxes (along with those of everyone else, of course). And I’ve been pretty successful. We’ve decreased the mill rate twice since I’ve been on the board, and my town has the third lowest tax rate in the state. (You’re welcome, fellow residents).
Through a series of unfortunate events – mostly, I forgot to duck – I am now chairman of the finance board. One of our longtime members just resigned because he’s moving out of town, and we need to appoint a replacement to fill in until the next election in November. I found a great candidate: a local businessman (he owns the General Store) who is a graduate of the prestigious Wharton School, so he clearly understands finance. We’ll vote to officially appoint him at our next meeting, and as soon as the Town Clerk swears him in, he’ll become a full-fledged member of the finance board.
Full-fledged. I told you we’d get there eventually. It means, literally, that he’s furnished with feathers which have developed and matured enough that he is fit to fly. (A “fledgling” is a bird – or a person – that is not fully mature and just learning to fly on its own.) In common usage these days, “full-fledged” means completely developed, fully qualified, meeting all the necessary requirements.
The “fledge” in “full-fledged” comes from Old English roots that mean “having feathers.” There may be a tenuous connection to the Old French word “fleche” (arrow), which gives us the word and the name “Fletcher,” someone who makes arrows. A “fletch” can refer to the stabilizing feather vanes on the back end of an arrow. The verb “to fletch” means to fit a feather onto an arrow. Basically, if you trace it all back far enough, fletcher and full-fledged have to do with feathers and flying.
I may or may not have referred to someone as a “full-fledged a**hole” the other day. I guess it would have been more linguistically appropriate to call him a full-fledged birdbrain.
