Hi hi, I was wondering if you know of any monthly meets for furries here in California. I live near Long Beach.
Yep yep! The major SoCal furmeets that I know of are:
- San Diego FurMeet (https://www.meetup.com/San-Diego-Furries/)- The Prancing Skiltaire (13412 Gilbert St, Garden Grove, CA 92844) occurring every second Saturday of the month
There are also the annual FurBQ meets! Those are the ones I definitely make a point of attending :D (http://socalfurs.com/event/socal-furbq-2017/)
I think the summary of my mood is that I'm glad I didn't let my attempt at trying out a Furbowl event be the only thing I did today, but boy is it a frustrating note for me to end the day on.
Even though I didn't bowl, I was hoping to socialize a little. I suppose two quick blips of conversation are better than zero, but I swear it was dozens of people in dozens of their respective friend groups. And if there was room to poke in and chat, it never felt like the right spot for me to do so. Even the pre-meet at a nearby park, I literally had a quick chat with someone before they immediately went to talking with another person once someone else arrived - and later another friend group.
Oh, and the crumble to the cobbler: they were doing a group photo in the large party room of the place. It was fursuiters for the first photo, then everyone else in the second. I couldn't freakin' get into THAT photo because all the head people taking photos were blocking the only doorway to get into said room for those photos!!!! Even in the symbolic sense, I didn't have the confidence to wiggle my way in.
Maybe it's just too big an event for what I wanted out of a furmeet, maybe I'm too stubborn to give up on trying events again for all I know. It's just so easy for me to feel dejected in the moment when it feels like an introvert's gotta win the lottery [with an extroverted or less-introverted friend being the "prize" of said lottery] in order to have a chance to socialize well with people. I know nearing 30 isn't the end all be all, but in a fandom that feels like it people enter it properly in the teens, the fact I didn't even consider myself a furry until my mid 20s feels like some cruel setback to what I wanna strive for.
I always see these great pics and stories about furmeets and how friendly and welcoming everyone is at them and it just makes me more annoyed that the furmeet local to me is apparently full of twats
I often think about going to one of the Mancfurs meets sometime, you know, to try and socialise a little more than i do right now. There are a lot of things that put me off it though, mainly a lack of fursuit, the fact its in a not-particularly-safe area of the city and also I’ve heard really bad things about drama/fighting that goes on there.
Also I’m still fucking traumatised after going to a brony meet a few years ago *shudders*
Media reports on alcohol and 'simulated sex' at NJ FurBQ
The New Jersey FurBQ, which has run since 2005, has been 'permanently' cancelled after allegations of 'simulated sex' between fursuiters and the presence of alcohol were raised at a town-hall meeting. Reports of the events have since appeared in local media. The event, typically held bi-annually on the weekends of Memorial Day and Labor Day, was a fundraiser for the Twin “W” First Aid Squad, and was held May 26 on the grounds outside their premises, attracting "almost 200", including over thirty fursuiters. A few weeks later, organizers announced that there would be no further instances of the event. An article in the Times of Trenton relates the allegations; those concerning alcohol were commented on by the major of West Windsor Township. The matter has also been raised by a local Fox affiliate, using footage appropriated from a furry fan. 80 donors have since given almost $3000 to the squad – ten times the amount reportedly raised at the FurBQ itself. However, this is a small fraction of the funds formerly donated by the township, and now at risk. Emphasis: No evidence has been provided to substantiate the claim of inappropriate activity; the media reports are based on claims by town officials, and now-withdrawn FA journals. read more
Santa Clara paper follows furs to 'Crack Chicken' meet
Californian student newspaper The Santa Clara tailed a group of furs to the weekly "Crack Chicken" meet, and gives a overview of the fandom and fursuiting. The article's tone is positive, though the claim that "most ... in the group own at least one fur suit, and many own more than five" may only be true in the Bay Area, if anywhere. read more
