“The darkness will swallow you whole.”

TREMBLING LEGS COULD NO LONGER CARRY HIM ; LUNGS BURNED WITH THE CHILLING RUSH OF OXYGEN , CHEST HEAVING ! —– He’d become acquainted with the ground when legs gave out, dirt cold as yellow blossoms tickled exposed skin. Running, nor walking, was no longer an option. ‘ YOU FAILED THEM, JAKE. YOU’RE GOING TO LET THEM DOWN AGAIN. ’ Thoughts frenzy like angered bees in his head, self-blame taking over clear conscience. The shattering of glass, the audible CRUNCH as she draws closer. After him, following his blood trail. Through the tall flowers and growing grass, he rolls over onto his back and braces for the worst, hand clamped tightly over bleeding laceration.
And she blinks into view, sporadic and haunting, tickling the peripherals of darkening vision before vanishing as quick as she had appeared. He is too EXHAUSTED to care now, craving those moments of peace and freedom. Craving Death’s gentle gaze to carry him into quiet darkness, to continue their dance from where he’d left off before dragged away again. DARKNESS… it’d become a second home, his truest friend. Comforting and honest, never hiding and ever present. Dark eyes don’t bother attempting to follow her stalking. ( Was she playing with him? Hoping he’d get up and run again to continue the chase? ) Fuck that.

Nobody liked being the bait, dangling on a fishing line for nosy animals to hunt after.
But, for the first time, she speaks. Voice echoing through the plains of the living and the dead, wavering eerily in the air and racking his eardrums. She is not screaming, rather, keeping it between them. ( THEIR LITTLE SECRET ). Eyes go wide, breath stills completely, clogs in throat and forces his silence. Did she know something he didn’t? Or was this a warning to be hearkened, a moment of PROPHECY to foretell the Entity’s plans?
Jake always was meant to be the PRODIGAL SON.
The grass crunches, footfalls retreating, but Jake doesn’t look back. Whether she’d gone or not, he doesn’t care. A second chance to right his wrongs, to make a change. ( To not be LIKE HER in this forsaken realm ). Heartstrings pull, ache and bleed, he gathers himself to stand, legs carrying him in a direction, hoping to find the others. Or, maybe, he was a fool for seeing any hint of humanity pushing to the surface.
‘ THANK YOU . ’ Another thought, but hope she accepts and understands his gratitude settles anyway. Giving up was too easy. LIVING was harder, and he should never give up that fight.
